The Sexual Dimorphism of Dermatoglyphic Quantitative Traits

Abstract:

Kvantitativní hodnota deseti prstů ruky (anglicky: Total Finger Ridge Count, TFRC) je dermatoglyfická proměnná, u které byly nalezeny systematické rozdíly mezi populacemi a také sexuální dimorfismus - muži mají obvykle TFRC v průměru vyšší. V mnoha studiích však nebyl číselný rozdíl mezi pohlavími statisticky významný av některých pracích měl i opačný smysl. Cílem této práce bylo pomocí metaanalýzy publikovaných údajů získat kvalitní odhad míry sexuálního dimorfismu TFRC u člověka a sledovat vliv moderujících proměnných, které mohou ovlivňovat diverzitu sexuálního dimorfismu TFRC mezi lidskými populacemi. Po rozsáhlém primárním průzkumu zdrojů bylo do metaanalýzy zařazeno 253 populačních vzorků ze všech obydlených kontinentů i řady ostrovů, který celkem zahrnoval 74772 jedinců (38406 mužů a 36366 žen). Velikost efektu (sexuálního dimorfismu) představoval standardizovaný rozdíl průměrných hodnot mužských aženských (SMD) a k jeho agregaci a dalším analýzám byly použity běžné metaanalytické statistické metody (model náhodných efektů, meta-regrese, lesní graf, trychtýřový graf). Byl nalezen statisticky významný dimorfizmus v TFRC, celkový agregovaný efekt (SMD) na základě 229 populačních vzorků zdravých lidí činil 0,2365 (s 95% intervalem spolehlivosti v rozmezí od 0,2159 do 0,2572). Rozdíly mezi geograficky definovanými populačními skupinami byly malé, statisticky nevýznamné. Nebyl zjištěn žádný výraznější vliv charakteru studie (rok a kvalita publikace, odlišné zastoupení mužů a žen ve vzorku), environmentálních faktorů (zeměpisná šířka a délka, nadmořská výška) ani demografických faktorů (věk, choroby jiné než chromozomální aberace). Populační skupiny se však lišily v míře vlivu TFRC mužů a TFRC žen na sexuální dimorfismus tohoto znaku. Zatímco v některých populačních skupinách dimorfismus mezipopulačně nesouvisel s průměrnými hodnotami TFRC mužskými ani ženskými (indická skupina), v jiných skupinách (skupina africká a evropská) souvisel pouze s průměrnými hodnotami mužskými, zatímco ve skupině asijské a australské souvisel dimorfismus pouze s průměrnými hodnotami ženskými a ve skupině americké jak s průměrnými hodnotami mužskými tak i ženskými. Z výsledků vyplývá jednak značná homogenita dimorfismu TFRC napříč geografickými oblasti a jeho nezávislost na některých environmentálních vlivech a jednak rozdíly v míře vlivu TFRC obou pohlaví na mezipopulační rozdíly v dimorfismu tohoto znaku. Diskutovány jsou možné příčiny zjištěných výsledků, potenciální vlivy dalších faktorů a využitelnost získaných výsledků v budoucích dermatoglyfických studiích TFRC.

Abstract:

Total Finger Ridge Count is a dermatoglyphic trait which has been systematically found to show differences among populations and also sexual dimorphism - males score higher on TFRC on average. In many studies the numerical difference was not significant and in some projects the results even showed an opposite effect. The aim of this project was to obtain a quality estimate of the extent of sexual dimorphism in humans according to the TFRC and to observe the effect of moderating variables which could influence the diversity of sexual dimorphism of TFRC across human populations. This study was a meta-analysis of previously published studies. After the extensive primary analysis of previously published studies, 253 population samples were included in this project. They came from all continents and some islands and overall the study involved 74772 individuals (38406 males and 36366 females). The effect size is a standardised difference between the average male and female values (SMD) and it was analysed using aggregation and other main meta-analytical statistical methods such as random effect model, forest plot and funnel plot. The results show a statistically significant dimorphism in TFRC; the overall aggregated effect (SMD) based on 229 healthy population samples was found to be 0.2365 (with 95% confidence interval in the range from 0.2159 to 0.2572). The differences between the geographically defined population groups were small and statistically not significant. No confounding effect of other variables such as the characteristics of the studies (the year and quality of the study, different ratio of males and females in the samples), environmental factors (geographical latitude and altitude, elevation above-sea level), or demographic factors (age, diseases other than chromosomal aberrations) was found in the study. However the population groups differed in the degree of influence of TFRC in males and TFRC in females on the sexual dimorphism of TFRC. While in some population groups dimorphism did not relate to the average values of TFRC in either males or females (the Indian group), in other population groups (the African and European groups) dimorphism related only to the average values found in males. In the Asian and Australian groups dimorphism related only to the average female values and in the American group dimorphism related to both average male and female values. The results show the significant homogeneity of dimorphism of TFRC across the geographical areas and its independence of some environmental factors. It also shows that TFRC of males and females influences the dimorphism of this trait differently in different geographical population groups. Finally, other possible causes of these findings, potential effects of confounding variables and the usefulness of the results in future dermatoglyphic studies of TFRC have been discussed.
