Influence of digitalization on experiencing time during travelling

Abstract:

Tato práce shrnuje vliv digitálních technologií na prožívání času při cestování s důrazem na vliv vizuálních médií, telekomunikačních technologií a informačních toků. K problému je přistupováno interdisciplinárně z hlediska společenských věd. Rešerše literatury z oblastí historie, psychologie, filosofie, kulturních a mediálních studií skládá dohromady obraz cestování jako dlouhodobého celospolečenského fenoménu, na jehož proměnách je demonstrován vliv digitálních technologií na lidskou mysl, a to především na její vnímání a prožívání času. Na čas je zde nahlíženo z pohledu moderní filosofie jako na dimenzi, která existuje v lidské mysli v lineární podobě budoucnost-přítomnost-minulost. Každá z časových kategorií je rozebrána pohledem turistického zážitku: budoucnost jako plánování a představy o cestě, přítomnost jako prožívání cesty samotné a minulost jako vzpomínka a působení cesty po návratu domů. K jednotlivým kategoriím jsou přiřazeny digitální technologie, jejichž možné působení má aspiraci proměňovat zážitek z cesty. Práce dochází k závěru, že používáním digitálních technologií dochází k delegování částí zážitku (cesty) z přítomnosti na minulost a budoucnost, čímž dochází k rovnoměrnějšímu rozložení intenzity zážitku mezi tyto tři časové kategorie. Zároveň je zmíněna limitace této teorie z důvodu omezené dostupnosti digitálních technologií velké části současné populace.

Abstract:

This work summarizes the influence of digital technologies at experiencing time during travelling, while accenting the influence of visual media, telecommunication technologies and information flow. The problem is approached interdisciplinary from the point of social science. Research of literature from the fields of history, psychology, philosophy, cultural and media studies puts together a picture of travelling as a long-term society-wide phenomenon, by whose transformation the influence of digital technologies on human mind is demonstrated, and above all, its perception and experience of time. Time is understood from the perspective of modern philosophy as a dimension, which exists in human mind in a linear form future-presence-past. Each of these time categories is examined by the point of a touristic experience: future as planning and visioning the journey, presence as experiencing the journey itself and past as a memory and impact of the journey after coming back home. Each category is assigned its digital technologies, whose possible effect has an aspiration to transform the experience from the journey. The work comes to a conclusion that using digital technologies causes delegating of parts of the experience (journey) from presence to past and future, and thus spreads the intensity of the experience more evenly in these free time categories. At the same time, limitation of this theory is considered due to limited availability of digital technologies to a big part of contemporary population.
