Narratives of Desire and Belonging: Suburban Experience in Sociological Perspective.

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zaplnění mezery v současném vědění o tuzemské residenční suburbanizaci: Přestože se v posledních letech objevila řada především sociálně geografických studií suburbánního prostředí, pohled samotných obyvatel nově postavených domů a ulic v jeho vědeckých reprezentacích téměř chybí. Jak vnímají, prožívají a interpretují lidé žijící v rychle se rozrůstajících obcích jejich proměnu? Jaké kvality lidé v novém prostředí hledají, jaké nacházejí? Jak reflektují proces rozhodování, stěhování a zabydlování v novém místě? A jak jejich příchod ovlivňuje život obyvatel, kteří se přistěhovali či v obci bydleli před nimi? Skrze analýzu narativů vytvořených v rámci kvalitativních rozhovorů, jsem se snažila porozumět: 1) zkušenosti s fenoménem suburbanizace, s bydlením v suburbanizovaných oblastech. Přestože na prvním místě mé výzkumné otázky stálo porozumění zkušenosti, vnímám a sleduji tuto zkušenost jako relační, vztahovou. Zajímají mne tedy: 2) interpretace pozic participantů a jejich jednání a také, jak interpretují jednání a pozice ostatních aktérů (jak se k sobě vztahují, jaké pozice vůči sobě zaujímají, jak jsou v jejich výpovědích konstruovány kategorie osob a hranice mezi nimi a jak se tyto vztahují k jejich jednání). Práce je rozdělena tři hlavní části. V teoretickém oddíle pojednávám o vývoji suburbanizace, nikoliv však prostřednictvím sledování jejího rozsahu či komparace různých zemí, ale spíše ji sleduji jako historicky ukotvený fenomén, který úzce souvisí s proměnami kultury bydlení i s proměnou společenských norem a vztahů na obecnější úrovni. Nejprve se zaměřuji na fenomén suburbanizace v jeho historickém kontextu, dále na teorii sociálních sítí a představení konceptu komunity a sousedství, jejich vztah k místu a prostoru a jejich specifickému použití ve studiích suburbánního prostředí. Prostor věnuji také kulturní teorii sociálních a symbolických hranic, relační teorii a jejich využití při interpretaci suburbanizace jako určitého vzorce spotřeby, výrazu vkusu a sociální distinkce. Přehled zakončuji představením studií reprezentací suburbanizace v populární (především americké filmové) kultuře, zdrojům i zrcadlení specifické suburbánní imaginace. Ukazuji, jak její silně stereotypizovaný negativní obraz slouží jako oblíbené a významné označované, tak zároveň jako označující pro kontradiktorní povahu západní modernity. Samostatná podkapitola je věnována také výzkumu fenoménu suburbanizace v České republice a také ve středoevropském prostoru s důrazem na vymezení hlavních linií dosavadního bádání. Historický kontext prostoru vlastního empirického šetření je stručně představen v kapitole o vývoji města Brna a jeho předměstí, hlavních populačních změnách, které ovlivňují také současnou situaci, historickém formování suburbánního typu výstavby. V metodologické části práce pak popisuji vlastní terénní šetření, jež mělo podobu 37 nestrukturovaných hloubkových rozhovorů s vybranými residenty okrajových brněnských městských částí či příměstských obcí, a to jak s jejich oficiálními reprezentanty, nově příchozími i stávajícími obyvateli. Představuji dvě hlavní fáze výzkumu a proměnu jeho zaměření směrem od případových studií ke zkoumání individuální zkušenosti, a také od tematické analýzy k analýze narativů. Ve třetím a čtvrtém oddíle prezentuji výsledky vlastního kvalitativního výzkumu. Nejprve se věnuji „narativům touhy“ – ukazuji, jaké hodnoty jsou pro nově příchozí obyvatele s jejich prostředím spojeny (příroda a krajina, bezpečí, čistota, svoboda atp.), jak interpretují své potřeby a svá rozhodnutí a také celý proces hled

ání nového místa bydlení a zabydlování se v něm. Následuje část „narativů soužití“, v níž se zaměřuji na vztahy mezi různými skupinami obyvatel v obcích tak, jak se objevily v hloubkových rozhovorech, sleduji formování lokálních identit, vzájemné označování a kategorizace obyvatel a jejich důsledky pro život v dotčených obcích, skrze jejich interpretace v rámci výzkumných rozhovorů. Zabývám se tedy vnímáním a prožíváním dynamického procesu vznikání nových pospolitostí s ohledem na jejich fungování ve vztahu k širším významovým, normativním a společenským strukturám.

Abstract:

The aim of my work is to fill the gap in current knowledge on residential suburbanisation in the Czech context. Despite the fact that in recent years a number of social-geographic studies of the suburban environment have appeared, the view from the perspective of the inhabitants of the newly built houses and streets is in these scientific representations still almost missing. How do people living in the fast-growing municipalities perceive, experience and interpret their transformation? What are the qualities they seek in the new environment? How do they reflect the decision-making process, the process of moving in, inhabitation and accommodation in the new location? And how does their arrival affect the life of the people who moved there or lived in the village before them? Through the analysis of narratives created within the framework of qualitative interviews, I sought to understand: 1) the experience of the phenomenon of suburbanisation. Even though my primary aim was to understand the experience, I trace and perceive it as relational. I was also interested in: 2) the interpretation of the position of the participants and their practices, and also, how they interpret the positions and practices of other actors (what discursive positions they occupy against each other and how, in their narratives, are constructed and negotiated the social and the boundaries between them). The work is divided into three main parts. In the theoretical section, I deal with the development of suburbanisation, however, not through the monitoring of its extent or by a comparison of the situation in different countries. Instead, I approach it as a historically anchored phenomenon, which is closely linked with changing housing cultures as well as with social norms and relationships on a more general level. Firstly, I focus on the phenomenon of suburbanisation in its historical context. I then deal with the theory of social networks and the concept of community and neighbourhood, their relationship to place and space and their specific use in studies of the suburban environment. I am also concerned with the cultural theory of the formation of social and symbolic borders, relational theory and their use in the interpretation of suburbanisation as a particular pattern of consumption – the expression of taste and distinction. I conclude the theoretical overview with the presentation of studies focused on the representation of suburbia in popular culture (especially in American movies), on the sources and mirroring of specific suburban imagination. I demonstrate how this negative stereotypical image serves as a popular and important signifier and at the same time as a signified for the contradictory nature of Western modernity. A separate chapter is dedicated to research on the phenomenon of suburbanisation in the Czech Republic and in Central Europe, with an emphasis on defining the main lines of recent inquiries. In the methodological part of the thesis, I describe my own experience from fieldwork, which took the form of 37 in-depth, unstructured interviews with 46 residents in peripheral parts of the city of Brno or peri-urban communities. Interviews were conducted both with official representatives of the municipalities and with newcomers as well as current residents. I present two main phases of the research and elaborate the way in which I changed my focus from case studies to a more detailed examination of individual experiences and from thematic analysis to analysis of the narratives. The third and the fourth parts of the manuscript are dedicated to the qualitative research results. First, I present "narratives of desire", showing what values and features of the new environment newcomers seek (nature and landscape, safety, purity, freedom, etc.), how they interpret their needs and their decisions to move, as well as the entire process of searching for a new place of residence and its accommodation. rceptions of the relations between different population groups in the municipalities, as they appeared in the in-depth interviews. I follow the formation of local identities, mutual identification and categorisation of the inhabitants and the consequences for social life in the study’s municipalities. Thus, I show the perceptions and experiences of the dynamic process of the formation of new communities with respect to their functioning in relation to the wider semantic, normative and social structures.
