Can we expect childless Czech society?

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá otázkou, aké sú tendencie mladých ľudí k bezdetnosti a aké sú charakteristiky ľudí, ktorí nemajú deti a ani si deti do budúcnosti neželajú mať, prípadne si svojimi plánmi nie sú istí. Teoretická časť sa zaoberá demografickými zmenami v Európe a vývojom v Českej republike po roku 1989. Zároveň sa v tejto časti snaží práca teoreticky vymedziť problematiku bezdetnosti a zaoberá sa štrukturálnymi a hodnotovými faktormi, ktoré môžu mať vplyv na tendenciu zostať celoživotne bezdetný. Výskumná časť následne analyzuje výskyt týchto faktorov v Českej republike na dátach z dvoch českých výskumov Manželství práce a rodina z roku 2005 a Souvislosti proměn pracovního trhu a forem soukromého, rodinného a partnerského života v české společnosti z roku 2006. Analýza odhalila viacero faktorov, ktoré môžu mať vplyv na tendenciu k bezdetnosti. Žiadny z týchto faktorov však nemal zásadný vplyv na bezdetnosť a napriek očakávanému nárastu bezdetnosti sa nedá predpokladať, že by mohla zostať česká spoločnosť bezdetná. Dieťa zostáva v Českej spoločnosti stále významnou hodnotou a veľká väčšina ľudí plánuje mať v živote aspoň jedno dieťa.

Abstract:

The thesis is dealing with the characteristics of people who are childless and do not even want to have children or do not know whether they want to have children, as well as with the question whether there are any tendencies among young people in the Czech Republic toward childlessness. The first part, theoretical background, is focused on the demographic progress in Europe, particularly in the Czech Republic after year 1989. Childlessness is defined, and cultural, as well as structural factors influencing childlessness are analyzed. In the second part, data from two major Czech research projects: Marriage, work and family from year 2005, and Connections between the transformation of labour market and the forms of private life, family and partnership in Czech society from year 2006, have been analyzed. The text covers the expectations one may have concerning childlessness in Czech society. The analysis of the data has indicated several factors, which may influence the tendency of Czech citizens toward childlessness. However, none of these factors has played a major role. Therefore, although there is an assumption that the proportion of childless people will rise, we cannot expect that Czech society will ever be completely childless.
