Psychology students and medical students view of death and dying

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce zjišťuje, jak vnímají studenti medicíny a psychologie smrt a umírání s ohledem na zkušenosti získané během studia. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část. Teoretická část představuje pojmy smrt a umírání, ontogeneze smrti, strach ze smrti, postoj ke smrti, dále se zabývá faktory, které je ovlivňují. Empirická část předkládá výsledky kvalitativního šetření, které je realizované technikou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se čtyřmi studenty medicíny a čtyřmi studenty psychologie. Výsledky ukazují, že zkušenosti získané během studia se promítají do představ studentů medicíny a do prožívání studentů medicíny a psychologie. Tyto zkušenosti se však týkají pouze vnímání smrti a umírání obecně, na vnímání vlastní smrti vliv nemají. V závěru práce jsou tato zjištění podrobněji popsána a diskutována.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is trying to explore medicine student´s and psychology student´s perception of death and dying to their experience obtained during their studies. The thesis consists of theoretical and empirical part. Theoretical part presents concepts of death and dyingy, ontogenesis of death, fear of death, attitude towards death and also deals with the intervening factors. The empirical part presents results of qualitative research, implemented by semistructured interviews with four students of medicine and four students of psychology. Results show that experience by during their studies are reflected in the conceptions of medical students and to the experience of medical students and psychological students. This experience is related only to perception of death and dying in general, whereas perception of their own mortality is not affected. These findings are described and discussed further in great detail.
