Comparative Analysis of Viewers Strategies in Czech and Slovak Audience of the Telenovela Thousand and One Nights

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou recepčních strategií českého a slovenského publika telenovely Tisíc a jedna noc. Soustředíme se především na to, zda existují rozdíly ve vnímání a v přístupu k seriálu mezi českými a slovenskými diváky. Do centra našeho zájmu jsme exponovali následující oblasti: praktický přístup k seriálu, vnímání reality, vztahování se k hlavním postavám v seriálu, motivy vedoucí ke sledování telenovely a problematiku genderu. Cílem práce bude odpovědět na hlavní výzkumnou otázku: „Jak se liší divácké strategie českého a slovenského ženského publika telenovely Tisíc a jedna noc?“. Naše práce vychází zejména z teorií a přístupů Birminghamské školy, zejména pak z modelu zakódování a dekódování a teorie užití a uspokojení. Další teoretická východiska pro nás představují například práce Janice Radway nebo Tamary Liebes a Elihu Katze.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses reception strategies of Czech and Slovak audience of a telenovela Thousand and One Night. Its main objective is to explore whether or not there are differences in perception and approach between Czech and Slovak audience. The thesis focuses on the following areas: practical approach to the telenovela, the perception of reality, the relationship between the audience and the main characters of the telenovela, motives for watching, and gender problematic. The aim of this thesis is to answer the main argument: “What is the difference between the viewer strategies of the Czech and the Slovak female audience?” To answer this question, the thesis draws upon Birmingham school theories and approach, especially the encoding/decoding model and uses and gratification theory, as well as other academic sources, e.g. works by Janice Radway, Tamara Liebes or ElihuKatz.
