The beginnings of a Testimony, Pavel Tigrid's quarterly journal, and the reaction of the communist regime in the Czechoslovak Republic to its existence

Abstract:

Tématem této práce jsou Počátky Svědectví, čtvrtletníku Pavla Tigrida, a reakce komunistického režimu v ČSR na jeho existenci. Pavel Tigrid se stal jedním z hlavních ideových a politických mluvčí čs. poúnorového demokratického exilu. Neodmyslitelnou etapou jeho života bylo vydávání časopisu Svědectví. Čtvrtletník pro politiku a kulturu vycházel nepřetržitě v letech 1956 až 1992. Od jiných exilových periodik se odlišoval tím, že nesloužil pouze k informování o situaci v ČSR, ale byl určen především k dialogu mezi exilem a domácí opozicí. Svědectví se stalo spoluvytvářejícím faktorem domácího politického a kulturního života v Československu. To samozřejmě neuniklo pozornosti čs. bezpečnostních složek. Činnost Pavla Tigrida a celé redakce Svědectví byla neustále sledována čs. rozvědkou, která si o tom pečlivě vedla záznamy. Práce mapuje zprávy čs. rozvědky a její reakci mezi lety 1956 až 1966.

Abstract:

The beginnings of “Testimony,” Pavel Tigrid’s quarterly journal, and the reaction of the communist regime in the Czechoslovak Republic to its existence are a subject of this thesis. Pavel Tigrid became one of the main ideological and political speakers of Czechoslovak after-February democratic exile. Editing of the “Testimony” journal was an inherent period of his life. The quarterly journal for politics and culture was edited in years 1956 to 1992 all the time. This journal was different from the other exile journals due to its function which was primarily a dialogue between exile and native opposition. It had also other functions and it did not only inform about the situation in the Czechoslovak Republic as the other journals did. Testimony became one of the creative factors of native political and cultural life in the Czechoslovak Republic. Czechoslovak security units did know about this fact. Czechoslovak reconnaissance pursued Pavel Tigrid and “Testimony”’s editors all the time and the reconnaissance made notes of it. This work deals with the reconnaissance’s reports and its reaction between 1956 and 1966.
