Reasons for Early Termination of Studies among Information and Library Sciences Students

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with academic failure of bachelor students of Information and Library Studies at Masaryk University. The aim of the thesis is to find out what reasons led to early termination of studies, what role the department played in this and what the department could do to change the life situation of these students. Through a qualitative thematic analysis, it was identified that the primary reasons for leaving the course are external factors, such as financial problems or academic exhaustion from studying a second degree. Other reasons for leaving are the lack of deeper friendships, not effective approach to studying, and avoidance of problems. The department's role in the departure of these students is primarily passive — the department lacks greater awareness campaigns about Masaryk University's support services and does not encourage seeking support from teachers. Overall, the thesis points to the importance of understanding and solving this problem for improving students´ experience and the success of their studies.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá študijnou neúspešnosťou študentov bakalárskeho stupňa Informačných štúdií a knihovníctva na Masarykovej univerzite. Cieľom práce je zistiť, aké dôvody viedli k predčasnému odchodu študentov z univerzity, akú rolu v tom hrala katedra a čo mohla katedra urobiť k tomu, aby životnú situáciu týchto študentov zmenila. Kvalitatívnou tematickou analýzou bolo identifikované, že pri-márnym dôvodom odchodu zo štúdia sú externé faktory, ako sú napríklad finančné problémy, či akademické vyčerpanie zo študovania druhého odboru. Ďalšie dôvody odchodu sú nedostatok hlbších priateľstiev, nevhodný prístup k štúdiu a vyhýbanie sa riešeniu problémov. Rola katedry v odchode týchto študentov je primárne pasív-na — zo strany katedry chýba väčšia osveta o podporných službách Masarykovej univerzity, alebo podpora v riešení problémov s vyučujúcimi. Celkovo práca pouka-zuje na význam porozumenia a riešenia tohto problému pre zlepšenie študentskej skúsenosti a úspešnosti štúdia.
