Influence of British museums on museums in the Czech lands

Abstract:

This thesis considers possible influence of British museums on museums in the Czech lands through a comparative method of development of museums as an institution in both countries. It examines the history of cabinets of curiosities, first museums, national museums and museums of applied arts in the Czech lands, set against British history of museums, analyses similarities and differences in order to describe impact of museums in Britain on museum in the Czech lands. Questions concerning a broader historical and political context of museum-making are not overlooked. The text represents the first attempt to make a comprehensive study and insight into the issue of to what extent the British museums have influenced Czech museums.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá možným vlivem britských muzeí na muzea v Českých zemích. Prostřednictvím komparativní metody sleduje rozvoj muzeí jako instituce v obou zemích. Práce zkoumá nejen dějiny kabinetů kuriozit, prvních muzeí, národních muzeí a uměleckoprůmyslových muzeí v Českých zemích ve srovnání s britskou historií muzeí, ale také analyzuje podobnosti a rozdíly za účelem popsat vliv muzeí v Británii na muzea v Českých zemích. Nejsou opomenuty i otázky týkající se širšího historického a kulturně-politického kontextu. Tento text představuje první pokus provést komplexní studii a nahlédnout do problematiky, do jaké míry ovlivnila britská muzea ta česká.
