Patentová ochrana v Evropě prošla dlouhým historickým vývojem a od druhé poloviny 20. století vznikají snahy o její sjednocení na nadnárodní úrovni. Dosud se podařilo pouze zjednodušit patentové přihlášky formou evropského patentu, který umožňuje snadněji získat jednotlivé národní patenty.
