Jáchym Topol: Gargling with Tar. Analysis of the English Translation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou anglického překladu románu Jáchyma Topola Kloktat dehet. Využívá postupu analýzy a hodnocení překladu popsaného v knize Petra Newmarka A Textbook of Translation. První část práce analyzuje výchozí text z hlediska jeho záměru a funkčních aspektů. Druhá část zkoumá účel překladu, a v třetí části je provedeno porovnání vybraných jevů zdrojového textu s překladem formou korpusu. Tyto jevy zahrnují mísení stylů v textu, nevhodné spojení slov, nepřirozený slovosled, užití krátkých jednoduchých vět, neologismy, užití hovorového jazyka, užití rusismů a ruštiny a častého výskytu hrabalovské fráze ´jen a jen´. Závěrečná část se soustředí na hodnocení překladu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of the English translation of Jáchym Topol´s novel Gargling with Tar. It follows the procedure of translation analysis and evaluation suggested by Peter Newmark in his work A Textbook of Translation. In the first part of the thesis the source language text is analyzed in terms of its intention and functional aspects. In the second part the purpose of the translation is surveyed and in the third part a comparison of selected source text items with the translation is carried out in the form of a corpus. The items comprise the mixture of registers in the text, inappropriate combination of words, marked word order, use of short simple sentences, neologisms, the use of colloquial language, the use of russisms and Russian and the frequent use of Hrabalian phrase ´jen a jen´. The final part focuses on the evaluation of the translation.
