Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce Virtuální tělo v tvorbě Diane Gromala a Char Davies se věnuje umělecké tvorbě dvou světoznámých umělkyň, ke které využívají virtuální realitu. Pro obě umělkyně je příznačné téma lidského těla a tělesnosti proměňující se pod vlivem nových technologií virtuální reality. Práce se soustředí zejména na rozbor a srovnání virtuálních projektů Dancing with the Virtual Dervish: Virtual Bodies (1994) od Diane Gromaly a Osmose (1995) od Char Daviesové. Téma virtuálního těla zasazujeme do širšího kontextu kyberkulturních narací. Zejména pak těch, které se věnují konceptu mizejícího těla (odtělesnění). Práce se také soustředí na pojem virtualizace těla virtuální realitou a na otázku, zda je virtualizace uskutečněním utopických představ o mizení biologického základu lidského těla a jeho hranic. V práci propojujeme teoretické koncepty virtualizace a mizení těla, které jsou uplatňovány v umělecké tvorbě Diane Gromaly a Char Daviesové. Umělecká tvorba obou umělkyň je v rámci České Republiky představována poprvé.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis Virtual Body in the Work of Diane Gromala and Char Davies focuses on the art of two world-acclaimed artists who use virtual reality in their work. For both of these artists, the topic of human body is characteristic along with embodiment being modified under the influence of new technologies of virtual reality. The thesis focuses mainly on the analysis and comparison of virtual projects Dancing with the Virtual Dervish: Virtual Bodies (1994) by Diane Gromala and Osmose (1995) by Char Davies. The topic of virtual body is set into a broader context of cybercultural narratives; namely such that are devoted to the concept of a disappearing body (disembodiment). The thesis also pays attention to the concept of virtualization of the body through virtual reality and to the question whether virtualization is a realization of utopian ideas of disappearance of biological basis of the body and its boundaries. The thesis interconnects theoretical concepts of virtualization and disembodiment, applied in the work of Diane Gromala and Char Davies. It is the first time that the work of both artists is introduced in the Czech Republic.
