Climate conditions of the selected glaciers on James Ross Island and their significance for glacier mass balance

Abstract:

Oblast Antarktického poloostrova včetně ostrova Jamese Rosse je známá výraznou klimatickou variabilitou. Vzhledem k průměrné letní teplotě vzduchu kolem 0 °C je hmotová bilance zdejších ledovců velmi citlivá na změny teploty. Cílem práce byla analýza vlivu meteorologických podmínek na sněhovou pokrývku a bilanci hmoty ledovců Davies Dome a Whisky Glacier na ostrově Jamese Rosse. V práci jsou použita měření meteorologických stanic spolu s výstupy modelů Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) a High Resolution Land Data Assimilation System (HRLDAS). Validace modelu WRF potvrdila, že tento model dokáže velmi dobře simulovat teplotu vzduchu a její kolísání. Rychlost větru a intenzita globálního slunečního záření korelovaly dobře s měřením, nicméně byly často nadhodnocené. Analýza výšky sněhové pokrývky ukázala, že hlavním obdobím akumulace sněhu je počátek léta, zatímco ve druhé polovině léta převládají ablační procesy. Na podzim a v zimě jsou změny výšky sněhu méně významné kvůli odnosu a sesedání nového sněhu. Hlavním zdrojem energie na ledovci Davies Dome v období 2015-2016 bylo krátkovlnné sluneční záření (45.7 W·m-2) a turbulentní tok tepla (22.0 W·m-2). Ztráty energie byly formou dlouhovlnného záření (-51.3 W·m-2), latentním tokem tepla (-11.6 W·m-2) a táním sněhu (-7.3 W·m-2). Během povětrnostních situací s výskytem fénu však docházelo k prudkému nárůstu intenzity tání. Během tří fénových situací trvajících celkem 14 dní vzniklo 45 % celkového ročního množství tavné vody, což ukazuje na význam těchto událostí pro hmotovou bilanci ledovců. Hlavní rysy energetické bilance na ledovci Davies Dome byly porovnány s dalšími studiemi v oblasti Antarktického poloostrova. Z dostupných dat vyplývá, že sublimace má významnější roli v energetické bilanci povrchu ledovců na ostrově Jamese Rosse než v oblasti Jižních Shetland.

Abstract:

The Antarctic Peninsula region, including James Ross Island, is known for its large climate variability. Due to a mean summer air temperature close to 0 °C, local glaciers are very sensitive to temperature changes. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of meteorological conditions on the snow height and mass balance of the Davies Dome glacier and Whisky Glacier on James Ross Island. Observations at meteorological stations and output from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and the High Resolution Land Data Assimilation System (HRLDAS) were used in this work. The WRF model validation confirmed that the model is able to simulate air temperature and its variation very well. Wind speed and global solar radiation showed a good correlation with measurements but were often biased up. The snow height analysis revealed that early summer is the main accumulation period whereas ablation processes prevail in the second half of the summer season. In autumn and winter, snow height changes are less significant due to snowdrift and compaction of the new snow. Net shortwave solar radiation (45.7 W·m-2) and sensible heat flux (22.0 W·m-2) were the main energy sources on Davies Dome in the 2015 2016 period. Net longwave radiation (-51.3 W·m-2), latent heat flux (-11.6 W·m-2) and snowmelt (-7.3 W·m-2) formed the energy loss. However, the snowmelt intensity was strongly increased during foehn events. Three foehn events together, lasting in total 14 days, generated 45 % of total annual snowmelt which implies their importance for glacier mass balance. Principle features of surface energy balance on Davies Dome were discussed with other studies from the Antarctic Peninsula region. Based on available data, sublimation has a greater importance in surface energy balance on James Ross Island glaciers compared to the South Shetland Islands region.
