Analysis of the determinants of movie success and the application of beauty economics in the movie industry

Abstract:

Tato práce popisuje filmové prostředí a analyzuje vliv determinantů úspěchu filmu z pohledu finanční úspěšnosti (tržby v box office) a oblíbenosti (na základě IMDb hodnocení). Dále práce zkoumá, co je krása a její vliv. V prostředí filmového průmyslu se pozoruje efekt krásy nejhlavnějšího herce a nejhlavnější herečky na úspěšnost filmu a vliv krásy na herce a herečky samotné. Za pomoci jednoduchých a vícenásobných regresí jsou tyto vlivy testovány. Mezi hlavní závěry testování patří, že stát původu filmu hraje důležitou roli v generování tržeb v box office, dále se také prokázalo, že rozpočet má velmi malý pozitivní vliv na tržby. Pokud je film pokračováním má tendenci získat více peněz v box office, naopak remake filmy mají výdělky menší. Z testování vlivu krásy se ukázalo, že ve vybraném datasetu nemá krása zásadní vliv na úspěch filmu ani na herce samotného. Průzkumy vlivu krásy ve filmovém průmyslu a průzkumy vlivu krásy na úspěch herců nebývají časté, a tedy tato práce poskytuje vcelku ojedinělý náhled do dané problematiky.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the film environment and analyses the influence of the determinants of film success in terms of financial success (box office sales) and popularity (based on IMDb ratings). Furthermore, the thesis examines what beauty is and its influence. In a film industry setting, the effect of the beauty of the lead actor and lead actress on the success of the film and the effect of beauty on the actors and actresses themselves are observed. Using simple and multiple regressions, these effects are tested. The main findings of the testing include that the country of origin of the film plays a key role in generating box office revenue, also budget is shown to have a very small positive effect on revenue. If a film is a sequel it tends to earn more money at the box office, on the other hand remake films tend to earn less. Testing the effect of beauty, it was found that in the selected dataset, beauty does not have a significant effect on the success of the film or the actor himself. Papers about the influence of beauty in the film industry and surveys of the influence of beauty on the success of actors are not common, and thus this paper provides a unique insight into the subject.
