Diversity of metazoan parasites of cyprinid fish species from selected areas of Mediterranean

Abstract:

Endemické druhy kaprovitých ryb (Cyprinidae) Balkánské podoblasti byly studovány z hlediska druhového složení a diverzity společenstev parazitů, abundance, prevalence, intenzity infekce a stupně hostitelské specifity a endemismu parazitů. Výzkum byl proveden v letech 2014 – 2015 na vybraných lokalitách v Řecku, Albánii a Bosně a Hercegovině. Odloveno a parazitologicky vyšetřeno na prezenci mnohobuněčných parazitů bylo celkem 57 druhů endemických kaprovitých ryb. Nejvíce druhů patřilo do třídy Monogenea – celkem 103. Dále bylo determinováno 18 druhů Trematoda, 5 druhů Cestoda, 14 druhů Nematoda, 2 druhy Acanthocephala, 5 druhů Copepoda, 1 druh Branchiura a 1 druh Acari. Zástupci parazitických taxonů Bivalvia a Myxozoa nebyli pro tuto práci determinováni. Z nalezených druhů parazitů bylo 66 rodově specifických, 40 druhově specifických a 63 endemických. Počet parazitických druhů u jednotlivých hostitelských druhů ryb se pohyboval v rozmezí od 1 do 16. Nejvyšší intenzity infekce byly zaznamenány v Řecku pro zatím nepopsané druhy rodu Dactylogyrus na Luciobarbus graecus a L. albanicus. Diverzita společenstev byla analyzována na úrovni metaspolečenstev a infraspolečenstev s využitím indexů diverzity. Metaspolečenstva parazitů u Luciobarbus graecus a L. albanicus dosahovala nejvyšší dominance. Metaspolečenstvo s nejvyšší druhovou diverzitou parazitů se vyskytla u hostitele Telestes montenigrinus, druhově nejvíce vyrovnaná jsou metaspolečenstva parazitů Rutilus panosi a Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus. Nejvyšší průměrná diverzita infraspolečenstev parazitů byla zjištěna u Alburnus neretvae, Barbus rebeli a B. prespensis. Metodou multidimenzionálního škálování bylo na základě indexů podobnosti zjištěno, že metaspolečenstva parazitů kaprovitých ryb z Řecka a Albánie vykazující vysokou podobnost, zatímco metaspolečenstva z Bosny a Hercegoviny se od nich významně liší. Také byla zjištěna podobnost metaspolečenstev parazitů kongenerických hostitelů v rámci rodů Squalius a Barbus a výrazná odlišnost u metaspolečenstev Alburnus, Rutilus a Telestes. Vysokým stupněm rodové či druhové hostitelské specifity se vyznačovaly druhy Dactylogyrus a Gyrodactylus, u ostatních druhů parazitů se jednalo o generalisty a nebyly to druhy endemické. Většina rodových specialistů a endemických druhů parazitů se vyskytovala především u hostitelů rodu Barbus, nejvíce druhových specialistů u Alburnus neretvae, Pachychilon pictum a Aulopyge huegeli a nejvíce generalistických a neendemických druhů u Telestes montenigrinus, Squalius vardarensis a Rutilus ohridanus. Srovnáním metaspolečenstev parazitů mezi různými lokalitami bylo zjištěno, že počet parazitů specialistů a endemitů byl víceméně podobný na všech lokalitách Řecka, Albánie a Bosny a Hercegoviny.

Abstract:

Endemic cyprinid fish species (Cyprinidae) of the Mediterranean area were analysed for their parasite species richness and diversity of parasite communities, abundance, prevalence, intensity of infection, degree of host specificity and endemism of parasites. This study was performed during 2014 – 2015 in the selected localities of Greece, Albany and Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 57 species of endemic cyprinid fishes were sampled and examined for the presence of metazoan parasites. The highest species diversity was reported within Monogenea – 103 species. Further 18 species of Trematoda, 5 species of Cestoda, 14 species of Nematoda, 2 species of Acanthocephala, 5 species of Copepoda, 1 species of Branchiura and 1 species of Acari were determined. The representatives of Bivalvia a Myxozoa were not determined in this study. Of all collected parasite species 66 were classified as genus specific, 40 as species specific and 63 endemic. Number of parasite species per endemic cyprinid species ranged from 1 to 16. The highest intensities of infection were reported for undescribed species of Dactylogyrus parasitizing Luciobarbus graecus and L. albanicus living in Greece. Diversity of parasite communities was analyzed at the levels of metacommunity and infracommunity by using indices of diversity. Metacommunities of parasites on Luciobarbus graecus a L. albanicus reached the highest dominance. The metacommunity with the highest species diversity of parasites was found for Telestes montenigrinus, the metacommunities of parasites reaching the highest species evenness were found on Rutilus panosi and Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus. The highest mean infracommunity parasite diversity was found for Alburnus neretvae, Barbus rebeli and B. prespensis. Using multidimensional scaling on the similarity of parasite communities expressed by the indices of similarity, the parasite communities of cyprinids from Greece and Albania were similar, whilst the parasite communities from Bosnia and Herzegovina were different from both of them. The similarity of parasite metacommunities of congeneric hosts belonging to genera Squalius and Barbus and the high dissimilarity of parasite metacommunities belonging to genera Alburnus, Rutilus and Telestes were found. The highest degree of host specificity and endemism was reported for the species of Dactylogyrus and Gyrodactylus, other species were represented by generalists and nonendemic species. The majority of genus specific parasites occurred mostly on Barbus, most of species specific on Alburnus neretvae, Pachychilon pictum and Aulopyge huegelii and most of generalists and nonendemic species on Telestes montenigrinus, Rutilus ohridanus and Squalius vardarensis. Comparing the localities there was no difference in the number of specialists and endemic parasites species between localities of Greece, Albania and Bosna and Hercegovina.
