Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on Scottish place-names. It provides an interesting overview of Scottish history and toponymy, both in mainland Scotland and its island. It aims to provide an analysis of the elements incorporated in Scottish place-names, with a special focus on their origin and meaning. Emphasis is also placed on elements whose origin is unclear or which might get mistaken for another element. The work is divided into eight chapters, of which the first and the last chapter is the introduction and final conclusion. The second chapter focuses on scientific fields and terminology regarding place-names. The third and fourth chapters provide a historical overview of the languages and nations that have had the most significant influence on the formation of Scottish place-names, including the name of Scotland itself. The remaining three chapters then focus on particular elements of place-names associated with features connected to the landscape, water bodies and settlement.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na skotské místní názvy. Nabízí zajímavý průřez historií a toponymií Skotska, a to jak jeho pevninské, tak ostrovní části. Jejím cílem je poskytnout přehled elementů vyskytujících se ve skotských místních názvech se zvláštním zaměřením na jejich původ a význam. Důraz je také kladen na elementy, jejichž původ je nejasný, nebo u nich může docházet ke vzájemným záměnám. Práce se skládá z osmi kapitol, z nichž první a poslední kapitolu tvoří úvod a závěrečné shrnutí. Druhá kapitola se zabývá vědními obory a terminologií spojenou s místními názvy. Třetí a čtvrtá kapitola poskytují historický přehled jazyků a národů, jež měly největší vliv na formování skotských místních názvů, včetně názvu samotného Skotska. Zbývající tři kapitoly se pak zaměřují na konkrétní elementy místních názvů, které jsou spojené s krajinou, vodními plochami a osídlením.
