Authority of Heroic Figures in the Early Christian Mythmaking: Confrontation of Jesus Christ and John the Baptizer

Abstract:

The focus of this work is set on the presentation of characters of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ in the literature of early Christianity of the 1st century, mainly in the Q source, Gospel of Mark and in Antiquities of the Jews by Josephus Flavius. My default point will be the new religionist paradigm by Burton L. Mack which studies the beginning of Christianity and his idea of mythmaking that allows us to look at myth as a part of social formation and one of its forms. Both characters have been treated the same way, as a part of mythmaking. John and Jesus were significant bearers of authority and their roles were important during the conception of identity of particular religious movements. On the basis of changing relationship John the Baptist to Jesus, the work tries to answer the question to what extent could John the Baptist be a threat to the authority of Jesus Christ. In other words, could the authority of John the Baptist be even bigger in some movements then Jesus's.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zameriava na profiláciu postáv Jána Krstiteľa a Ježiša Krista v ranokresťanskej literatúre 1. storočia - predovšetkým v zbierke Q, v Evanjeliu podľa Marka a v Židovských starožitnostiach Josepha Flavia. Budem vychádzať z novej religionistickej paradigmy Burtona L. Macka, skúmajúcej počiatky kresťanstva a jeho konceptu mýtotvorby, ktorý umožňuje nazerať na mýtus ako súčasť a jednu foriem sociálneho utvárania. Ako so súčasťou mýtotvorby sa dá zaobchádzať aj s postavami Jána a Ježiša. Obe postavy boli významnými nositeľmi autority a boli dôležitými pri vytváraní identity konkrétnych náboženských skupín. Práca sa snaží na základe premenlivého vzťahu Jána k Ježišovi, zodpovedať otázku, do akej miery mohla postava Jána Krstiteľa ohrozovať autoritu Ježiša Krista. Inými slovami či je možné, že Ján mohol mať v niektorých skupinách dokonca väčšiu autoritu ako Ježiš Kristus.
