Analysis of wage differences between Czechs and Slovaks in the Czech labour market

Abstract:

Tato práce je založena na analýze mzdových nerovností mezi Čechy a Slováky na českém trhu práce. Mzdové rozdíly jsou analyzovány v kategoriích vzdělání, věku a třídách klasifikace CZ-ISCO a hlavním cílem je zjistit, čím jsou mzdové rozdíly způsobeny. Nejprve jsou vysvětleny teorie migrace a její dopady a v závislosti na tématu práce je představen historický vývoj migrace v rámci České republiky až do současnosti. Praktická část je zaměřena na empirickou analýzu mezd, která je provedena pomocí klasického lineárního regresního modelu. V empirickém modelu byla prokázána významnost proměnné reprezentující vysoce vzdělané pracovníky. Významný vliv na mzdový rozdíl má naopak i základní a nedokončené vzdělání, což dokazuje velmi odlišné charakteristiky příchozích Slováků. V kategorii klasifikace zaměstnání dle tříd CZ-ISCO není příčina jednoznačná, lze pouze vyloučit, ve kterých skupinách zásadní mzdové rozdíly nevznikají. Na základě doplňujících analýz vyplívá, že největší mzdové rozdíly vznikají u zaměstnanců pracujících jako specialisté a ve věku mezi 40 až 49 lety.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is based on the analysis of wage differences between Czechs and Slovaks in the Czech labour market. Wage inequalities are analysed in the categories of education, age and classes of the CZ-ISCO classification and the main aim is to identify what causes these wage differences. First, the theory of migration and its effects on wages are explained. According to the topic of the work, the historical development of migration in the Czech Republic up to the present is presented. The practical part is focused on the empirical analysis of wages, which is performed by using a classical linear regression model. In the empirical model, the significance of the variable representing highly educated workers was demonstrated. On the other hand, basic and incomplete education also have a significant effect on the wage gap which proves the very different characteristics of incoming Slovaks. In the category of job classification according to CZ-ISCO classes, the cause is not unambiguous. It is only possible to exclude some groups where significant wage differences do not arise. Additional analyses exposes that the largest wage differences arise for employees working as specialists ranging in age from 40 to 49 years.
