Convertion of Czech Women to Islam

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá konverzí českých žen k islámu, těch, které se zde narodily a byly zde vychovány. Práce se zaměřuje na motivy, které je ke konverzi vedly, a následnou změnu životů konvertitek. Zabývá se také tím, jak jejich konverzi přijala rodina, přátelé a blízké okolí a jak samy ženy pociťovaly změny v osobním životě. Práce se zaměřuje na to, jak probíhalo budování nové identity, včetně změny oblékání, tedy nošení hidžábu nebo jiného zahalení, a s ním související reakce okolí, především časté problémy na pracovišti, při shánění zaměstnání a ve školách a také nepříjemné reakce majoritní společnosti. Celá práce je postavena na kvalitativním výzkumu a je podložena osobními výpověďmi a životními příběhy devíti informátorek. Jejich výpovědi jsou dávány do souvislostí s teoriemi, které se týkají konverze a porovnávány s výzkumy mezi konvertitkami k islámu v různých zemích Evropy a ve Spojených státech

Abstract:

This thesis is about Czech women converting to Islam, about those, who were born and raised here. It is focusing on the motives of their conversion and on the subsequent changes of their lives. It is also about how their families, friends and entourage have coped with their conversion and how these women have felt about the change of their personal lives. Furthermore this thesis is focusing on building of their new identities, including their new dress code, meaning they have to wear hijab or another form of head/body covering clothes, and the change of the public attitude towards them, which made them feel uneasy, mainly problematic relations at their jobs, schools or while trying to find their new jobs. The whole thesis is built on qualitative research and is backed up with personal testimonies and life stories of nine informants. Their testimonies are compared to theories concerning conversion and compared with researches about Islam converts in different European countries or United States of America.
