Railway competition – possibilities and limitations

Abstract:

Předmětem této diplomové práce je otázka zavádění konkurence do železniční dopravy. Na základě literární rešerše a komparace odborných studií, jak empirických, tak teoretických, autor identifikuje přínosy a náklady zavádění konkurence do odvětví železniční dopravy v zemích Evropské unie a Velké Británie. Pojmenovány jsou i specifické faktory, jež mohou ovlivňovat úspěch zavádění jednotlivých reformních kroků. Srovnávací analýza je zaměřená na zjištění autorů ze čtyř stěžejních oblastí, jež se pojí s liberalizací železniční dopravy v Evropě. Jsou jimi vertikální separace, horizontální separace, konkurence na trhu a konkurence o trh.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is the issue of introducing competition into rail transport. On the basis of a literature review and a comparison of expert studies, both empirical and theoretical, the author identifies the benefits and costs of introducing competition into the rail transport sector in the European Union and the UK. Specific factors that may influence the success of the introduction of each reform are also named. The comparative analysis focuses on the authors' findings in four key areas related to rail liberalisation in Europe. These are vertical separation, horizontal separation, on-rail competition and competition for the market.
