Dependence of structure of phytosociological data on sampling design

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na srovnání struktury fytocenologických dat získaných různými snímkovacími designy. Srovnával jsem čtyři designy sběru dat: (1) náhodný design, (2) design se stratifikací prostřednictvím environmentálních faktorů, (3) design stratifikovaný podle subjektivně vymapovaných vegetačních typů, a (4) preferenční design. Každý datový soubor obsahuje 35 fytocenologických snímků lesní vegetace doubrav a dubohabřin, získaných z území o velikosti 2,5 km2. Celková druhová bohatost, průměrný počet druhů ve snímku a počet vzácných druhů je nejnižší u náhodného designu a roste se subjektivitou snímkování. Ordinačními metodami jsem zjistil, že nejvíce variabilní je preferenční soubor a soubor stratifikovaný podle vegetačních typů, naopak nejméně variabilní je náhodný soubor. Hlavní variabilita celého datového souboru je nejvýrazněji spojena s gradientem živin. V obou stratifikovaných náhodných souborech však nejsilněji souvisí s gradientem vlhkosti a světla. S pomocí divizivní klasifikace modifikovaným algoritmem TWINSPAN jsem zjistil, že nejlépe vymezené skupiny snímků s největším počtem diagnostických druhů vytváří design stratifikovaný podle vegetačních typů, naopak nejhůře vymezené skupiny s nízkými počty diagnostických druhů vznikají u náhodného designu. Hypotézy týkající se ekologických závislostí pozorovaných ve studovaném území byly nejčastěji potvrzeny na základě preferenčního souboru, nejméně často u obou stratifikovaných náhodných designů. Některé rozdíly mezi náhodným a preferenčním designem je možné zobecnit: preferenční design obvykle vede k vyššímu celkovému počtu zaznamenaných druhů, lepšímu zachycení celkové variability vegetace, přehlížení přechodných typů vegetace, vyššímu počtu diagnostických druhů a tedy i k výraznějšímu vymezení vegetačních typů pomocí klasifikace, a k častějšímu odmítnutí nulové hypotézy při statistickém hodnocení vztahů vegetace a prostředí. Většina dalších rozdílů je však podmiňována mnoha různými faktory a je obtížné je generalizovat. Ještě problematičtější je zobecnit strukturu dat získaných stratifikovaným náhodným designem, neboť je především závislá na výběru kritérií pro stratifikaci.

Abstract:

The aim of the master thesis is to compare differences in the structure of the data based on different phytosociological sampling methods. Four sampling designs were compared: (1) simple random sampling design, (2) environmentally stratified random sampling design, (3) random sampling design stratified by vegetation units, (4) preferential sampling design. Each sample is composed of a set of 35 plots of oak forest and oak-hornbeam woodland vegetation sampled in a total area of 2,5 km2. There is the lowest total species richness, average species number in a single plot, and the number of rare species in the simple random sample. There is an increasing trend in these numbers as the subjectivity of sampling increases. Using ordination techniques, the preferenial sample and the random sample stratified by vegetation units were assessed the most variable. The simple random sample was assessed the least variable on the contrary. The main variation gradient of the whole dataset is related to the nutrient gradient. The main variation gradient is related to moisture and light gradients in both stratified random samples by contrast. Using divisive classification by the modified TWINSPAN algorithm, the random sampling design stratified by vegetation units was found out to produce the best delimited clusters with most diagnostic species. The poorest delimited clusters containing low number of diagnostic species were produced by the classification of data from the simple random sampling design. The hypotheses referring to the expected ecological relationships in the study area were most frequently verified by the preferential sample. These hypotheses were verified the least frequently by both stratified random samples on the contrary. Some differences between simple random and preferential sampling design can be generalized: the preferential design usually leads to a higher total number of species, to higher variation of recorded vegetation, to the transitional vegetation types avoidance, to higher number of diagnostic species and therefore to using classification to a better pronounced delimitation of vegetation types, and to the more often rejection of the null hypothesis while statistical testing the vegetation-environment relationships. Most of other differences are influenced by various factors and it is difficult to generalize them. They are usually influenced by various factors and each case is specific. It’s a bit more difficult to generalize the structure of the sample gained by stratified random sampling because it is dependent mostly on the chosen stratification criteria.
