Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na zhodnocení rozdílů ve využití trpného rodu v obchodní angličtině. Cílem práce je dokázat, zda existují rozdíly ve využití trpného rodu s ohledem na dvě vybraná kritéria – zaprvé, zda je využití pasiva ovlivněno původem vybraného podniku, a zadruhé, zda je ovlivněno odvětvím, ve kterém podnik působí. Pro účely této analýzy byly vybrány britské a americké společnosti působící v odvětvích jako je vydavatelství, automobilový průmysl, elektronika, tabákový průmysl anebo prodej potravin. Data byla extrahována z online volně dostupných výročních zpráv konkrétních podniků. Rozdíly ve využití trpného rodu v rámci jednotlivých kategorií byly zhodnoceny na základě předem zvolených kritérií – celkového podílu trpného a činného rodu, použití záporných tvarů, použití modálních a frázových sloves, užití infinitivů a příslušných časů, a také s ohledem na nejčastěji používaná sloves a jejich variabilitu. Práce také zahrnuje základní teoretické informace vztahující se k obchodní angličtině a k použití trpného rodu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is aimed at evaluating differences in the use of passive voice in business English. The target of this thesis is to prove whether there are any differences in the use of passive voice with regard to the two selected criteria ‐ firstly, whether the use of passive is influenced by the location of the company, and second, whether the use of passive is influenced by the industry in which the particular company operates. For the purpose of this analysis British and American companies were selected, operating in industries such as publishing, automotive, electronics, tobacco and food sales. The data were extracted from the online freely accessible annual reports of the concrete companies. The differences in the use of passive voice among the individual categories were assessed based on the previously selected criteria ‐ the overall share of active and passive verbs, the use of negative forms, the use of modal and phrasal verbs, the use of infinitives and particular tenses, and also with regard to the mostly used verbs and their variability. The thesis also includes background theoretical information related to business English and the use of passive voice.
