Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na slučitelnost stavových sloves s průběhovými. Stanoveny byly dva cíle: Zaprvé, zjistit, zda jsou platné teorie viz níže: • Stavová slovesa nemají dynamickou formu, protože to by představovalo vnitřní rozpor mezi stavovostí slovesa a průběhovostí zásadní pro průběhová slovesa (Comrie 1976:36, 38). • Stavy jsou neslučitelné s průběhovým aspektem a vyžadují prostý čas minulý přítomný či budoucí (Dowty1979: 55). • Je důležité poznamenat, že definice stavových sloves neříká, že jsou nekompatibilní s průběhovými, ale že v případě kombinace s průběhovými slovesy je nutná změna výkladu jiným způsobem než pouhým přidáním "dočasného" významu průběhového aspektu (Quirk 1985: 200, 2002). Zadruhé zjistit, za jakých okolností se stavová slovesa používají v kombinaci s průběhovými a do jaké míry je kombinace těchto sloves používána v Britském Národním korpusu. Pro případovou studii bylo vybráno dvanáct stavových sloves (vědět / znát, věřit, rozumět, pamatovat si, mít rád, milovat, nenávidět, svědět, bolet, lechtat, chutnat a vonět) ze čtyř různých druhů stavů (stav rozumový, stav emocí / postojů, stav tělesného pocitu a stav vnímání). Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, první část se zabývá situačními typy, stavy a druhy stavů, průběhovými formami a jejich použitím, kombinací stavových sloves s průběhovými, a nakonec diagnostickými a kódovácími testy. Druhá část analyzuje 12 stavových sloves a jejich použití v kombinaci s průběhovými v Britském národním korpusu. Tato slovesa jsou analyzována z hlediska, kolikrát se sloveso vyskytlo v kombinaci s průběhovým, v kterém roce byly publikovány příklady s tímto výskytem, registry (psané nebo mluvené), domény (informativní nebo imaginativní), a účel použití stavového slovesa v kombinaci s průběhovým ve větě (výraz emocí, váhání, dočasnosti, proces změny stavu, důraz, radost / nedostatek radosti, a tak dále). Výzkum ukazuje, že stavová slovesa jsou do určité míry kompatibilní s průběhovými a že v některých příkladech se používá stavové sloveso v kombinaci s průběhovým ke změně významu věty.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the compatibility of stative verbs with the progressive. There are two objectives: First, to find out if the theories below are valid, Stative verbs do not have progressive forms since this would involve an internal contradiction between the stativity of the verb and the nonstativity essential to the progressive (Comrie 1976:36, 38) States are incompatible with the progressive aspect and require the simple past present or future (Dowty1979:55) It is important to observe that the definition of stative verbs is not so much that they are incompatible with the progressive but that if they are combined with the progressive, a change of interpretation other than the addition of the 'temporary' meaning of the progressive aspect is required (Quirk 1985: 200, 2002). Second, to find out under what circumstances stative verbs are used with the progressive and to what extent the combination of stative verbs and the progressive are used in the British National Corpus. Twelve stative verbs(know, believe, understand, remember, like, love, hate, itch, ache, tickle, taste and smell) from four different state types (states of intellect, states of emotion/attitude, states of bodily sensation and states of perception) are selected for a case study. The thesis is divided into two parts, the first part deals with situation types, states and state types, progressive forms and uses, stative verbs with the progressive, and finally diagnostic and encoding tests. The second part analyzes 12 stative verbs and their use with the progressive in the British National Corpus. These verbs are analyzed in terms of how many times the verb occurred with the progressive, in what year the examples in which the occurrences are found were published, register (written or spoken), domain (informative or imaginative), and the purpose of use of the stative verb with the progressive in the sentence (expression of emotiveness, tentativeness, temporariness, process of changing state, emphasis, enjoyment/lack of enjoyment, and so on). The research reveals that stative verbs are to some extent compatible with the progressive and that in some of the examples the stative verbs are used with the progressive to change the meaning of the sentence.
