Objectification and optimization of the evaluation of cartographic symbology for maps in crisis management

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřena na hodnocení map pro krizové řízení. Problematika hodnocení těchto specifických map je nahlížena především z hlediska jejich celkové použitelnosti, přičemž jsou podrobně rozebrány všechny aspekty, které její úroveň významně ovlivňují. V úvodní teoretické části jsou nejdříve vymezeny hlavní i dílčí cíle práce a použité metody. Poté je celá problematika zasazena do rámce teoretické kartografie, ve které jsou nastíněna východiska pro možné přístupy k hodnocení kartografických děl. Ve zvláštní kapitole je zdůrazněna i mezioborová povaha celého procesu hodnocení, a proto jsou zmíněny psychologické aspekty ovlivňující percepci informací v mapě. V neposlední řadě je blíže popsán i současný stav v oblasti map pro krizové řízení. V druhé části práce jsou získané poznatky aplikovány na hodnocení použitelnosti vybraných map pro operátory krizového řízení. Nejdříve jsou na základě výsledků získaných v průběhu hodnocení stanoveny hypotézy, které jsou následně ověřeny při empirickém testování. Pro toto testování, které je provedeno pomocí interaktivního testovacího modulu, je navržen komparativní vícefázový test pro stanovení úrovně použitelnosti jednotlivých map. V závěrečné části jsou získané výsledky interpretovány. Předkládaná práce zčásti prezentuje postupy a výsledky, kterých bylo dosaženo v průběhu řešení výzkumného záměru MSM0021622418 Dynamická geovizualizace v krizovém managementu. Stejně tak jsou nastíněny i možnosti dalšího výzkumu v této oblasti.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on evaluation of maps for crisis management. The evaluation of the maps is primarily based on usability analysis that includes all relevant aspects. In the first part of the thesis main and partial objectives and methods are specified. The issues of map usability are set to the framework of theoretical cartography that shows some possible approaches to the evaluation of cartographic products in crisis management. Methods of the evaluation are chosen with special emphasis on interdisciplinary character of map reading process. Psychological aspects of perception of the visual information are mentioned to explain the issues of map legibility. In the second part of the thesis the theoretical aspects are applied to the evaluation of selected maps for crisis management operators. The results of the evaluation are interpreted and particular research hypotheses are set. Those assumptions are empirically verified during an experiment, which is designed with an interactive testing module. The experiment consists of comparative multicriteria test that measures the level of usability of selected crisis maps. Results of the experiment are subsequently compared with the set of hypotheses. The thesis partly presents some research methods and results achieved during the research project MSM0021622418 Dynamic Geovisualization in Crisis Management. Other possibilities for further research in this area are outlined too.
