Institutionalization of unmarried cohabitation

Abstract:

The submitted thesis summarizes present approaches towards the issue of institutionalization of unmarried cohabitations in sociology. The main part is focused on the introduction and subsequent criticism of the concept of unmarried cohabitation as an insufficiently institutionalized social phenomenon by Steven L. Nock who uses this concept to clarify the differences which he has found between the cohabitating and married couples, especially in the area of the satisfaction and happiness felt by the partners, the stability and quality of relationships with their relatives, in which cohabitation appears to be the less beneficial form of partnership. The thesis presents variant explanations of these differences and offers a complex overview of sociological research in this area in the last twenty years. The thesis points out some serious methodological flaws which are still topical in the area of unmarried cohabitation research and which influence the theoretical explanation of the phenomenon and have implications in the public sphere. Cross-sectional studies which do not divide particular dimensions of the phenomenon are insufficient. The thesis stresses out the necessity of clarification of a concept of institution before this status is or is not granted to a particular social phenomenon, in this case to the unmarried cohabitation. As the source of comparison of the unmarried cohabitation and marriage is the fact that children are a part of many unmarried cohabitations thus fulfilling one of the functions of marriage, we illustrate our request for clarification of the concept of institution and the change of methodological paradigm on the research of this kind of unmarried cohabitation. Cohabitation with children follows specific habitual patterns and normative expectations, in an anthropological sense of the word it is thus an institution.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca je zhrnutím doterajších prístupov k problematike inštitucionalizácie nemanželských spolužití v sociológii. Jej nosná časť sa venuje predstaveniu a kritike konceptu nemanželského spolužitia ako nedostatočne inštitucionalizovaného sociálneho javu od Stevena L. Nocka, ktorý tento koncept použil na vysvetlenie rozdielností, ktoré objavil medzi kohabitujúcimi a manželskými pármi, a to predovšetkým v oblasti pociťovanej spokojnosti a šťastia vo vzťahu, stability a kvality vzťahov s príbuzenstvom, kde kohabitácia sa javí ako menej prospešná forma partnerskej únie. Práca predkladá súhrn rôznych pohľadov venujúcich sa vysvetleniu týchto rozdielností, podáva komplexný obraz o stave sociologického štúdia v tejto oblasti za posledných dvadsať rokov. Upozorňuje na vážne metodologické nedostatky, ktoré v oblasti výskumu nemanželských spolužití stále pretrvávajú a následne sa odrážajú v konceptuálnom uchopení tohto javu, čo má svoje implikácie vo verejnej sfére a apeluje na nutnosť vyjasnenia si samotného konceptu inštitúcie pred tým, než je či nie je tento status pripísaný istému sociálnemu javu, v našom prípade nemanželskému spolužitiu. Prierezové štúdie neoddeľujúce jednotlivé dimenzie javu sú nedostatočné. Keďže prameňom porovnávania nemanželského spolužitia s manželstvom je skutočnosť, že súčasťou mnohých nemanželských spolužití sú aj deti, čím fakticky napĺňajú jednu z funkcií manželstva, naše požiadavky – ujasnenie si konceptu inštitúcie a zmenu metodologického rámca – deklarujeme na príklade preskúmania práve tohto druhu nemanželského spolužitia. Kohabitácia s deťmi sa riadi špecifickými habituálnymi vzorcami a normatívnymi očakávaniami, a teda je inštitúciou v antropologickom zmysle.
