Jules Michelet:: Historical or Literary Narrative Style?

Abstract:

This Master's diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the narration of the French historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874) and specifically of his writings Histoire de France (The History of France, first six volumes concerning the Middle Ages). Firstly, the work describes the theoretical problem of the nature of historical writing, the cultural and historical context of the analyzed writings (the romantic historiography) and the work and philosophy of its author, Jules Michelet. Then the thesis analyses the different aspects of the writings, based on the example of the extracts from the History of France: the description of the territory, the symbolism of the author and his poetic language, the rhythm and the construction of the narration and the conception of historical figures. The task of the present thesis is to determine if "Histoire de France" belongs to the historical or the literary narrative style.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bude analýza narace francouzského historika Julese Micheleta (1798-1874) a konkrétně jeho díla Histoire de France (Dějiny Francie, prvních šest dílů věnovaných středověku). Práce nejprve přiblíží problém povahy historického textu, dobovému kontextu (popis romantické historiografie) a dílu a myšlení Julese Micheleta. Poté budeme na vybraných textech analyzovat jednotlivé aspekty díla: pojetí prostoru, symbolismus a básnický jazyk autora, rytmus a konstrukci vyprávění a práci s historickými osobnostmi. Budeme se snažit určit, zdali se jedná o vyprávění historické či literární.
