Reclaiming Voices and Bodies: Women in Postcolonial Singapore and Female Characters in the Debut Novels of Jing-Jing Lee, Amanda Lee Koe, and Sharlene Teo

Anotace:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat debutové romány tří singapurských spisovatelek: How We Disappeared (2019), který napsala Jing-Jing Lee, Delayed Rays of a Star (2019), jehož autorkou je Amanda Lee Koe, a Ponti (2018), který je dílem Sharlene Teo. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části: první se zabývá rozborem historických, socio-kulturních a politických souvislostí, které vedly ke změně postavení žen v Singapuru, a to od koloniálních dob po aktuální dění v singapurské společnosti. Druhá, analytický část, se zaměřuje na analýzu samotných románů a jejím cílem je rozebrat společná feministická témata, jako je objektivizace nebo podřadné postavení žen.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse debut novels by three Singaporean women writers: How We Disappeared (2019) by Jing-Jing Lee, Delayed Rays of a Star (2019) by Amanda Lee Koe, and Ponti (2018) by Sharlene Teo. This thesis is divided into two parts: the first one overviews the historic, socio-cultural, and political background of the changes in the position of women in Singapore, since the colonial era to the current state of affairs in Singapore’s society. The second, analytical, part focuses on the analysis of the novels and aims to discuss common feminist themes, such as the inferiority and objectification of women.
