Roger Bacon and his Relation to Contemporary Medicine according his Treatise "De erroribus medicorum"

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je předběžně prozkoumat postoj Rogera Bacona k lékařství jeho doby. Kap. 1 představuje Rogera Bacona (asi 1214 ? asi 1294), jeho život a dílo a věnuje zvláštní pozornost jeho lékařským spiskům, jejich rukopisné tradici a autenticitě. Kap. 2 je věnována jednomu z těchto spisků, na němž se zvláště zakládá výše zmíněné zkoumání, totiž spisku De erroribus medicorum. V této kapitole se pokouším na základu vnitřních i vnějších důkazů odvodit datum vzniku tohoto spisu, posléze popisuji jeho kompozici a obsah. Dále věnuji značnou pozornost Baconovým zdrojům a podrobně popisuji autory a texty, které v tomto spisku Bacon cituje nebo na které odkazuje. Na konci této kapitoly popisuji některé aspekty Baconova vztahu k dobovému lékařství. K práci je připojen komentovaný překlad vybraných částí De erroribus medicorum.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is a preliminary investigation of Roger Bacon?s attitude towards medicine of his age. Chapter 1 introduces Roger Bacon (c. 1214 ? c. 1294), his life and works, and pays special attention to his medical opuscules, their manuscript tradition and authenticity. Chapter 2 is devoted to one of these opuscules on which the aforementioned investigation is especially based ? namely, De erroribus medicorum. In this chapter, I endeavour to infer the date of origin of this treatise, on the basis of internal and external evidences, then the composition and contents of the treatise are described. Considerable attention is focused on Bacon?s sources in this opuscule and the authors and texts which he cites or refers to are scrutinized. At the end of the chapter, some aspects of Bacon?s attitude towards contemporary medicine are described. Finally, an annotated translation of selected parts of De erroribus medicorum is attached to the thesis.
