How to animate the body?

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat mechanismy dopadu amatérského tance na spojení mezi mozkem a tělem. Do vlastního výzkumu byli zapojeni členové neprofesionální taneční skupiny pro dospělé, kteří trénují pod mým vedením 3 roky, a to od září 2016 až do současnosti. V první části naší práce jsme zkoumali vztah moderního člověka s jeho tělem. Zvážili jsme vliv kultu těla a bodypozitivity na to, jak člověk hodnotí své tělo. Zvážili jsme také několik psychologických praxí, pomáhajících obnovit vztah ke svému tělu a začít se o něj starat. Ve druhé části jsme nahlíželi na tanec jako na komunikační kanál mezi člověkem a jeho vlastním tělem. Tanec jsme považovali za jeden ze způsobů jednoduché a intenzivní komunikace s vlastním tělem. Probrali jsme příležitosti, které choreografie dává nejen profesionálům, ale také amatérům, zjistili jsme rozdíly mezi technikou výuky tance při práci se začátečníky a profesionály, zaznamenali jsme výsledky pravidelného cvičení. Když mluvíme o výsledcích, máme na mysli nejen fyzické úspěchy, ale také hmatatelné změny v každodenním životě. Prozkoumali jsme několik způsobů interakce mezi učitelem a dospělými studenty, zjistili jsme, proč je skupinové cvičení vhodnější než individuální cvičení, vypracovali jsme bezpečnostní požadavky na školení s neprofesionály. Podrobně jsme prozkoumali výsledky průzkumu mezi účastníky dospělé skupiny neprofesionálů, kteří pravidelně tančí 3 roky. Ve třetí části naší práce jsme prozkoumali výsledky provedeného výzkumu a zjistili, že tanec je schopen pomoci obnovit spojení se svým tělem. Průzkum účastníků skupiny ukázal, že v průběhu 3 let se jejich vztah k tělu změnil: pokud před začátkem tanečních lekcí vnímala převážná většina studentů svá těla spíše negativně, nyní k popisu svých těl používají většinou pozitivní adjektiva. Průzkum účastníků jasně ukázal, jak tanec v dospělém věku může ovlivnit všechny ostatní oblasti života. Po třech letech výuky si studenti všimnou významného zlepšení koordinace pohybů, zvýšení vytrvalosti, rozvoje pružnosti, zmizel strach a panika před něčím novým. Samotný přístup k lekcím se mezi členy skupiny také významně změnil: namísto předvídání tvrdé práce a úkolů, „které nelze udělat“ čekají na „setkání se sebou“, skvělou náladu, příležitost učit se něco nového a dát svému mozku důvod k vytvoření dalšího řetězce neurálních spojení. Náš výzkum tak jasně ukazuje pozitivní dopad tance na spojení člověka s jeho tělem. Účastníci skupiny respondentů se stali aktivnější, zdravější, pozitivnější a vyrovnanější. Všechny tyto faktory nakonec určují celkovou úroveň spokojenosti se svým vlastním životem a míru psychické pohody každého člověka.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to study the mechanisms with which amateur dancing influences the connection between one´s brain and body. We conducted a study in which we have involved members of an amateur dance group for adults, whom I have been training for 3 years already – since September, 2016 up until now. In the first part of this thesis, we examined the relationship between a modern person and his body. We considered the influence the cult of the body and bodypositivity has on the way one sees his own body. We also considered several psychological practices that help people restore the relationship with their body and start taking proper care of it. In the second part, we have viewed dance as a channel of communication between a person and his body. We considered dance as a simple and intensive channel of communication with one’s body. We have discussed the possibilities choreography offers to not only professionals, but amateurs as well. We have looked for differences between training techniques applied on professionals and those applied on beginners. We have recorded the results of regular training. Training meaning not only physical changes but also changes in everyday life. We have examined various ways of interaction between a teacher and an adult student. We have found out why are group activities better than individual. We have come up with safety requirements for training with amateurs. We have taken a detailed look on the results of our survey among members of an amateur dance club that has been dancing regularly for the past 3 years. The third part of this thesis examines the results of our survey and we have discovered that dance helps us restore the connection with our bodies. The results of the survey show that the participants have changed their opinions of their bodies during the last 3 years. If the majority of the participants viewed their bodies in a more negative way, they now describe their own bodies in a much positive way. The survey clearly showed how dance can influence all aspects of adult life. After three years of training, the students show great improvement in movement coordination, stamina, flexibility, eliminating fear and not panicking when facing change. We have also noticed a significant shift in the student’s attitude towards trainings: instead of dreading hard work and impossible task, they look forward to meeting their inner self, to being in a good mood, to having the opportunity to learn something new and to give their brains a reason to create yet another neuron chain. Our research clearly shows the positive impact dance has on the connection between oneself and one’s body. Our students became more active, healthy, positive and calm. All these factors ultimately decide our overall happiness and psychological wellbeing.
