Structure of exposure-related forest-steppe in Central Europe

Abstract:

Lesostepní krajiny jsou tvořeny komplexní mozaikou fyziognomicky lišících se biotopů (lesů a stepních trávníků). Díky tomu jsou obvykle druhově bohatší než krajiny s jednotnou fyzio-gnomickou strukturou. V severní části Panonské pánve je většina lesostepí expozičních, tzn. stepní trávníky se vyskytují na svazích orientovaných na jih, zatímco na svazích s jinou orien-tací obvykle roste les. Historicky byla většina těchto míst extenzivně obhospodařována, dnes jsou však vesměs bez pravidelného managementu nebo je jejich management zaměřen na ochranu diverzity. Na lesostepní krajiny je totiž vázáno mnoho vzácných a ohrožených druhů rostlin a živočichů. Předložená práce si dává za cíle: (i) vybrat několik příkladových lokalit v severní Panonii, kde je dobře vyvinutá expoziční lesostep; (ii) na těchto místech popsat jednotlivé biotopy, které tento komplexní ekosystém tvoří; (iii) charakterizovat vegetační dynamiku prostřednictvím zaznamenání regenerace dřevin ve stepních enklávách; (iv) porovnat druhovou bohatost lesostepních ekosystémů vyvinutých na různých substrátech. Studie byla zpracována v několika regionech v severní Panonii: pahorkatiny jižní Moravy (CZ), vápencové kopce nejzápadnějších Karpat (AT, CZ, SK), Zadunajské středohoří (H) a Transkarpatská nížina (UA). Na 16 lokalitách byly podél transektu zapsány fytocenologické snímky ve všech fyziognomicky lišících se biotopech (lesní a lemová vegetace nad a pod stepní enklávou a samotná step). Podél tohoto transektu jsem také zaznamenal všechny jedince dřevin (včetně jejich semenáčků) po metrových intervalech. Rozrůzněnost lesostepních biotopů jsem znázornil pomocí analýzy hlavních koordinát (PCoA) a fidelity jednotlivých druhů k lesostepním biotopům. Porovnal jsem hustotu dřevin na jeden metr transektu napříč lesostepními biotopy i v rámci lesostepí na hlubokých a mělkých půdách. Vegetační vymezení lesostepních biotopů není výrazné, naopak sousedící biotopy mezi sebou mnoho druhů sdílejí. Druhové složení ekotonů je víceméně přechodné mezi dvěma sousedícími biotopy. Druhová bohatost v eko-tonech byla vyšší na skalních lesostepích, zatímco na hlubokých půdách byla podobná jako v lese a ve stepi. Semenáčky dřevin byly nejhojněji zastoupené v lese, zatímco ve stepi byly jen vzácně nebo chyběly. Několik druhů však mělo vazbu na jiný z lesostepních biotopů. Před-kládaná práce přispívá k poznání procesů, které udržují druhovou bohatost a vegetační struk-turu lesostepních krajin, porovnáním několika jejich biotopů v různých regionech při západní hranici eurasijského lesostepního biomu.

Abstract:

Forest-steppe landscapes are formed of a complex mosaic of physiognomically contrasting habitats (forests and grasslands) and thus are generally species-richer than the landscapes formed of habitats of similar physiognomy. In the northern Pannonian Basin, the majority of forest-steppes are exposure-related, i.e. steppe is occupying different proportions of the south-facing slopes of the otherwise forested hills. Historically most of these sites were influenced by extensive farming but nowadays most of them are abandoned or managed for conservation purposes. They harbour a high number of rare or endangered species and supply a wide spectrum of ecosystem services. This study is aiming at: (i) identifying sites in the northern Pannonian Basin in which the exposure-related forest-steppe vegetation mosaics are well developed; (ii) describing individual habitats of the exposure-related forest-steppe landscapes; (iii) characterizing vegetation dynamics at the forest-steppe boundary in the exposure-related forest-steppe by analysing the pattern of woody species regeneration; (iv) comparing plant species diversity of exposure-related forest-steppe sites on different bedrocks. The study was conducted in different regions of the northern Pannonian Basin: the loess hilly landscape of southern Moravia (CZ), limestone hills of the westernmost Carpathians (AT, CZ, SK), Trans-danubian Mts (H) and the Transcarpathian Lowland (UA). Sixteen sites with well-developed exposure-related forest-steppe ecosystems were chosen, and on each of them, all physiognomy-defined habitats of the south-facing slope (i.e. forest, steppe and the ecotones between them) were sampled along a transect. All individuals of woody species including juveniles were sampled in 1 m intervals. The floristic differentiation of forest-steppe habitats was assessed using principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and calculating the fidelity of species to certain habitats. The density of woody seedlings was compared among the habitats. It was found that the floristic differentiation between habitats in the forest-steppe mosaic is relatively low, and a high number of species is shared between neighbouring habitats. Species composition of ecotones was intermediate between steppe and forest. The species richness of the ecotones was higher on the sites with hard rocks, while on deep soils, it was similar to those of both steppe and forest. Juveniles of woody species were most abundant in forest, while in steppe they were sparse or missing. Several woody species appeared to have an affinity to some forest-steppe habitat. This study contributes to the understanding of the patterns and processes that maintain plant diversity in the exposure-related forest-steppe landscapes by comparing individual components of this landscape mosaic in various regions at the western border of the Eurasian forest-steppe biome.
