The presentation of verb complementation by to–infinitive and gerund clauses in linguistic materials and English books (B2 level)

Abstract:

Infinitivní a gerundiální doplnění sloves je pro většinu studentů obtížný gramatický jev. Důležitou roli zde hraje učitel, který by měl studentům pomoci při zvládnutí komplikovanosti dané gramatické oblasti. Tato bakalářská práce popisuje infinitivní a gerundiální doplnění sloves pouze v předmětové pozici a porovnává, jak tuto oblast zpracovávají tři akademické lingvistické učebnice a tři učebnice angličtiny na úrovni B2. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. První část je věnována teorii, tzn. pozice infinitivu a gerundia, popis a rozdělení sloves do skupin, která tento typ doplnění vyžadují. Druhá část analyzuje prezentaci gramatického jevu v akademických lingvistických učebnicích a učebnicích angličtiny na úrovni B2. Závěrečná část shrnuje výsledky analýzy a může být přínosem jak učitelům, tak studentům připravujícím se na zkoušku FCE a pomoci jim orientovat se ve výběru lingvistických materiálů, které jim mohou osvětlit nedostatky vyskytující se v učebnicích angličtiny.

Abstract:

To-infinitive and gerund complementation is difficult for most students. An important role is played by the teacher, who should help them to manage the complexity of the grammar area. This thesis describes gerund and to-infinitive complementation verbs only in object position and compares how the area is treated by three linguistic materials and B2 level English books. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to the theory, the infinitive and gerund position, the description and division of verbs into groups that require this type of complementation. The second part analyzes the presentation of the grammar in linguistic materials and B2 level English books. The final section summarizes the results of analysis and it can be beneficial to both teachers and students preparing for the FCE exam to orientate in the choice of linguistic materials that they can clarify the lacks occurring in the English books.
