Reduction in the subtitling of TED talks

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá krácením při titulkování TED talků z anglického do českého jazyka. Cílem provedené analýzy vybraných videí bylo zjistit, které strategie krácení byly využívány nejčastěji. Tato analýza je založena na strategiích, které popsal José Díaz-Cintas v knize Audiovisual translation: Subtitling a Fotios Karamitroglou v článku „A proposed set of subtitling standards in Europe“. Díky specifickému žánru TED talků jsou v nich použity také další strategie, které se tato práce snaží popsat. Všechna videa byla nejprve zanalyzována pouze na základě údajů z titulkovací platformy Amara, což umožnilo odhadnout, která videa budou v titulcích nejvíce zkrácena. Tyto odhady se posléze po další analýze potvrdily. Některé popsané strategie jsou poměrně rozsáhlé, proto byly případy krácení spadající do těchto kategorií dále okomentovány. Popsány byly také nové strategie, které se v titulcích TED talků objevovaly častěji.

Abstract:

The objective of the present thesis is to explore how reduction is achieved in the subtitling of TED Talks from English to Czech. Several talks are analysed in order to find out which reduction strategies are employed the most. The analysis is based on reduction strategies as described by José Díaz Cintas in his book Audiovisual translation: subtitling and Fotios Karamitroglou in the article “A Proposed Set of Subtitling Standards in Europe”. As there are other strategies used as well, due to the specific genre of TED Talks, this thesis tries to identify further strategies that are used. During a preliminary analysis based on the data from a subtitling interface Amara, talks which would possibly have the highest number of reduction of any kind were identified, which was later confirmed in the analysis. As some of the strategies of reduction are quite broad, these were further discussed with emphasis to the different ways they can be employed. Furthermore, several new reduction strategies used in the subtitling of TED Talks were described.
