Motherhood representation in soap operas: Life at the Castle and Very Fragile Relations

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zobrazením mateřství v českých soap operách Život na zámku a Velmi křehké vztahy, jejichž vznik dělí třináct let. Vychází přitom z předpokladu, že mateřství je sociálním konstruktem, ke kterému se váže mnoho genderových stereotypů. Analytická část je postavena na diskurzivní analýze vybraných dílů (respektive klíčových scén) soap oper, na které je nahlíženo optikou genderových teorií. Matky jsou zde charakterizovány na základě svého vztahu k dětem, dále ke vztahu k partnerovi a svému okolí a ve vztahu k práci. Lepší konceptuální uchopení analyzovaných matek umožňuje typologie Kláry Janouškové. Závěr práce tvoří komparace obou soap oper, která ukazuje, jak jsou matky v seriálech zobrazeny a jak se toto zobrazení proměnilo v čase.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the depiction of motherhood in Czech soap operas Život na zámku and Velmi křehké vztahy, the latter was released thirteen years after the former. The core assumption of this thesis is that motherhood is socially constructed and closely linked to several gender stereotypes. The research is based on a discursive analysis of selected episodes (or key scenes) of soap operas, which are surveyed from a gender theory point of view. Chosen mothers are described through their relationship to the children, to their partner and to their surroundings, job and workplace. These selected mothers are better understood and conceptualized using the typology of Klára Janoušková. At the end, the two soap operas are compared, which reflects how mothers are depicted in them and how has this depiction changed over the years.
