Influence of EU membership on Czech cities

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zkoumat vliv členství v EU na velkoměsta v České republice. Centrálním aspektem výzkumu bude otázka, jak jsou tato města schopna organizačně se adaptovat na narůstající agendu evropské integrace. Práce analyzuje činnost odpovědných odborů na magistrátech Ostravy a Brna a pozoruje především strukturální, organizační a personální změny dané členstvím Česka v Evropské unii. V teoretické části práce bude užit koncept evropeizace, především z hlediska proměn polity a politics. Cílem teoretické části práce bude příprava konceptu, definování základních pojmů a poukázání na případné limity konceptu. Z teoretické části potom bude vycházet část praktická. Případové studie obou českých měst budou vycházet výhradně z hloubkových rozhovorů prováděných s úředníky relevantních odborů daných měst. V další části práce budou studie komparovány, cílem této komparace pak bude zjistit shodné a odlišné znaky ve změnách, kterými magistráty Ostravy a Brna prošly v důsledku vstupu ČR do EU.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to examine the influence of EU membership on Czech cities. The central aspect of research will be the issue of how these cities are able to organisationally adapt to increasing agenda of European integration. The thesis analyzes the activity of responsible departments in the municipal authorities of Ostrava and Brno and observes especially the structural, organizational and personal changes caused by Czech membership in the European Union. In the theoretical part will be used the concept of Europeanization, especially in terms of polity and politics changes. The goal of the theoretical part will be the preparation of the concept, definition of main ideas and reference to possible limitations of the concept. Practical part will then result from the theoretical part. Case studies of both Czech cities will be based solely on depth interviews with officials of relevant departments of the cities. In the next part of the thesis the studies will be compared, the goal of this comparison then will be the identification of similar and different characteristics in changes, which the municipal authorities of Ostrava and Brno have undergone as a result of Czech accession to the EU.
