The Depiction of Harriet Tumban in Contemporary Pop Culture

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na postavu americké historie Harriet Tubman, uprchlé otrokyně, abolicionistky a sufražetky, a její reprezentaci v současné populární kultuře. Z pohledu její intersekcionality práce analyzuje film Harriet (2019) a s využitím Clarkova modelu reprezentace menšin se zaměřuje na menšiny, které Tubman reprezentuje. Práce se také zabývá iniciativou Obamovy administrativy a organizace Women on 20s, která chce nahradit portrét bývalého prezidenta Andrewa Jacksona portrétem Harriet Tubman na dvacetidolarové bankovce.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the figure of American history Harriet Tubman, a fugitive slave, abolitionist, and suffragist, and her representation in contemporary popular culture. From the perspective of her intersectionality, the thesis analyses the movie Harriet (2019) and using Clark’s model of minority representation focuses on the minorities Tubman represents. The thesis also discusses the initiative of the Obama administration and the Women on 20s organization to replace the portrait of former president Andrew Jackson with the portrait of Harriet Tubman on the 20-dollar bill.
