Vocabulary of Drugs in the Corpora of French Rap Songs: semantic analysis in dynamic synchrony

Abstract:

The present thesis examines the drug terminology in texts of Fench rap songs based on onomasiological approach. We supposed that the use of substandard vocabulary of drugs is in constant evolution and that its protagonists use various procedures of word formation and their combinations to communicate the message to the target audience. Considering the substandard nature of given lexicon we postulated lower dictionarisation of the concerned lexems and shorter definitions in general monolingual dictionaries than in the dictionaries specialized in the given area. We examinated the practical use of substandard lexicon within two contadictory styles of rap in order to prove different use of the lexems of the concerned area. We have drawn the rap songs mentioning terminology realted to drugs, its distribution and application on the RapCor repository. A collection of 273 songs has become the basis of the practical component of our study. Our analysis proved the wide range of figures of speech, word formation and their combinations. On the contrary, we point out different rate of the dictionarisation within the dictionary categories. We also describe the comparable use of concerned vocabulary in the conscious style of rap and its hard core representation.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá drogové výrazy ve francouzských rapových písních na základě onomasiologického přístupu. Vycházeli jsme z předpokladu, že substandarní jazykové prostředky týkající se dané oblasti prochází neustálým vývojem a protagonisté využívají různých slovotvorných prostředků a jejich kombinací za účelem sdělení zprávy danému publiku expresivně a s identitárním podtextem. Vzhledem k substandardní povaze daného lexika jsme vyslovili hypotézu, že tyto lexikální jednotky jsou definovány v běžných francouzských výkladových slovních méně častěji a stručněji než ve slovnících, které se zaměřují na substandardní výrazy. Praktické užití substandardního lexika jsme zkoumali v rámci dvou protichůdných stylů rapu, na kterých jsme chtěli dokázat dichotomii příznakového lexika z oblasti drog. Východiskem pro praktickou část se stal korpus složený z 273 skladeb z korpusu rapových písní RapCor, ze kterého jsme vybrali písně obsahující lexikální jednotky týkající se drog, jejich distribuce a aplikace. Závěry našeho zkoumání potvrzují rozmanité využití a kombinování slovotvorných prostředků. Naopak poukazují na různou míru lexikalizace v rámci slovníkových kategorií a srovnatelné využívání slovních jednotek v písních rapového stylu hardcore a angažovaného proudu.
