Czech American Dream

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou krajanů, jejichž předci pocházeli z dnešního území České republiky. Tito lidé se rozhodli imigrovat do Spojených států amerických, najít zde lepší život pro sebe a své blízké, splnit si svůj český americký sen. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, první je část teoretická, na kterou navazuje sekce empirická. V teoretické části vymezuji základní teoretická východiska práce, jež se pojí s problematikou migrace. Pokusila jsem se také o popis české a americké identity. Dále jsem se zaměřila na zmapování nejvýraznějších migračních vln a nejčastějších důvodů, které vedly k migraci do Nového světa. Na konci této sekce se nachází nejoblíbenější cílové destinace, kam se přistěhovalci usazovali. Empirická část obsahuje informace o identitě amerických Čechů perspektivou genealogických bádání. Hlavním cílem této práce je poznání toho, co pro Američany, kteří byli narozeni na území Spojených států amerických již jako právoplatní občané, znamená fakt, že mají české kořeny. Výzkum byl uskutečněn za pomoci dotazníkového šetření. Výzkumný vzorek se skládal z 40 Čechoameričanů, jejichž předci pocházeli z Čech nebo Moravy a deseti genealogů. V této sekci je rovněž možné nalézt užitečné zdroje pro vlastní genealogický výzkum.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of compatriots whose ancestors chose for their lives the United States of America instead of staying in their home country. The thesis is divided into two parts, first is theoretical and second is empirical one. In the theoretical part I will mention the main terms which are associated with the issue of migration. I will depict the major qualities of Czech and American identity. Then I will move forward with the process of migration. I will focus on mapping the most typical migration waves and the most common reasons for it. At the end of this section can be found the most popular destinations, where the immigrants settled. The empirical part contains information about Czech-Americans through the perspective of genealogical research. The main goal of this paper is to find out, what mean for Americans who were born in the U.S. as ordinary citizen, the fact that they have Czech roots. The research was conducted using the questionnaires, which was filled by forty respondents who have Czech ancestors and ten genealogists. In this section you can also find the sources which could be useful for doing your own genealogical research.
