Islam as a determinant of international relations

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na výzkum přítomnosti orientalistických stereotypů mezi občany České republiky vůči občanům Egypta. Vzhledem k dominantnímu islámskému vyznání v Egyptě může nesprávná interpretace tohoto náboženství často formovat tyto předsudky. Cílem práce je zkoumat případnou přítomnost předsudků u českého obyvatelstva při pohledu na Egypťany a porozumět jejich míře a povaze. Metodologicky je práce založena na vytyčení teoreticko-metodologického rámce, který poskytuje základ pro analýzu dat z průzkumu dotazníkového šetření. Toto šetření bylo prováděno na vzorcích české populace a populace Egypta. Egyptští respondenti byli dotazováni ohledně svých osobních charakteristik a postojů k běžným aspektům každodenního života, které jsou často předmětem předsudků. Následně byly jejich názory porovnány s odpověďmi českých respondentů na obrácené otázky týkající se egyptského životního stylu. V teoretické části práce je analyzován vznik islámu, právo šaría, orientalismus a vztah mezi Blízkým východem a Západem, což poskytuje kontext pro pochopení zkoumané problematiky. Výsledky naznačují, že předsudky a stereotypy ve vztahu k Egypťanům jsou přítomny, ačkoli jejich intenzita se může lišit. Obzvláště problematickými oblastmi, ve kterých se čeští respondenti s Egypťany neshodnou, jsou vnímaný nepořádek a nedostatečná práva žen v Egyptě. Na druhou stranu, existují také projevy racionálního a objektivního přístupu k tématu, které odrážejí komplexní pohled respondentů na danou problematiku. Závěry práce poukazují na důležitost porozumění a přehodnocení těchto předsudků, zejména v kontextu mezinárodních vztahů a kulturního dialogu. Tato práce přispívá k diskusi o orientalistických postojích v české společnosti a zdůrazňuje potřebu dalšího výzkumu v této oblasti.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on exploring the presence of orientalist stereotypes among the citizens of the Czech Republic towards citizens of Egypt. Due to the dominant Islamic faith in Egypt, misinterpretation of this religion can often shape these prejudices. The aim of the thesis is to examine the potential presence of prejudices among the Czech population when looking at Egyptians and to understand their extent and nature. Methodologically, the thesis is based on establishing a theoretical-methodological framework, which provides the basis for analysing data from a questionnaire survey. This survey was conducted on samples of the Czech and Egyptian populations. Egyptian respondents were questioned about their personal characteristics and attitudes towards common aspects of daily life, which are often subject to prejudices. Subsequently, their opinions were compared with the responses of Czech respondents to reverse questions regarding the Egyptian way of life. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the origins of Islam, Sharia law, orientalism, and the relationship between the Middle East and the West are analysed, providing a context for understanding the researched issue. The results indicate that prejudices and stereotypes towards Egyptians are present, although their intensity may vary. Particularly problematic areas where Czech respondents disagree with Egyptians are perceived disorder and insufficient women's rights in Egypt. On the other hand, there are also expressions of a rational and objective approach to the topic, reflecting the complex view of respondents on the issue. The conclusions of the thesis emphasize the importance of understanding and reconsidering these prejudices, especially in the context of international relations and cultural dialogue. This thesis contributes to the discussion on orientalist attitudes in Czech society and underscores the need for further research in this area.
