The role of gender in the behavior and perception of video game players

Abstract:

V této práci se zabýváme problematikou genderu ve vztahu k videohrám. Používáme přitom binární genderovou teorii. Klademe si za cíl prozkoumat jednotlivé vztahy mezi hráči, hráčkami a hrami. Definujeme si zásadní pojmy jako gender, feminismus, feminita, maskulinita, sexismus, popisujeme fungování online komunikace a snažíme se ukázat, jak se tyto pojmy prolínají s videoherním designem a s herní komunitou. Dále sledujeme různé statistiky pro určení vztahu a chování mužů a žen vůči hrám. Zajímají nás počty hráčů, jejich motivace, výběr her a platforem, stejně jako jejich výkonnost, což jsou všechno časté elementy genderové stereotypizace hráčů a hráček. Následně zkoumáme vztah hráčů a hráček, který se hodně prolíná s genderovou toxicitou, což v této práci také reflektujeme. Zajímá nás přitom především komunikace v rámci her. Nakonec shrnujeme vlivy toxicity na hry, hráče a herní komunity a ukazujeme si, jak se s toxicitou herní vývojáři vypořádávají a co by případně mohli ještě zvážit.

Abstract:

In this work we deal with the issue of gender in relation to video games. We use binary gender theory. We aim to explore the individual relationships between male players, female players and games. We define key concepts such as gender, femi-nism, femininity, masculinity, sexism, describe the functioning of online communi-cation and try to show how these concepts intersect with video game design and the game community. We also follow various statistics to determine the relation-ship and behavior of men and women towards games. We are interested in the number of players, their motivation, the choice of games and platforms, as well as their performance, which are all common elements of gender stereotyping of male and female players. Subsequently, we examine the relationship between players, which is very much intertwined with gender toxicity, which we also reflect in this work. We are mainly interested in communication within the games. Finally, we summarize the effects of toxicity on games, players, and gaming communities, and show how game developers are dealing with toxicity and what else they might con-sider.
