Assessment of population structure of temporary and permanent fauna in streams using microsatellites

Abstract:

Pro permanentní i temporární složku bentické fauny představují různé přirozené (geografická vzdálenost, pohoří, terestrické prostředí) a antropogenní (velké nádrže, stavby, aglomerace) bariéry významnou překážku pro komunikaci populací. To ve svém důsledku vede k omezení genového toku a diferenciaci jednotlivých subpopulací. Míru izolace různými typy bariér i jednotlivé události v jejich historii lze pak kvantifikovat na základě vyhodnocení jejich genetické struktury. Mikrosatelity se v současnosti jako vhodné markery používají pro celou řadu populačních studií, jelikož dobře popisují recentní změny. Ze studií vyplývá větší prostorová strukturovanost populací permanentní fauny a silnější schopnost disperze temporární fauny, což ale neplatí ve všech případech. Probíhající globální změna klimatu může vést k ohrožení celé řady druhů menších stojatých vod a toků zejména v horských a pramenných oblastech, které jsou ohroženy růstem teploty a vysycháním. Populační studie ohrožených druhů mohou pomoci ochranářské genetice k identifikaci skrytých rizik a při plánování efektivního managementu populací, který umožní jejich přežití a zachování pro budoucí generace.

Abstract:

Various natural (geographical distance, mountain ridge) and antropogenic (large reservoirs, constructions and agglomerations) barriers present a significant obstacle to communication of populations of permanent and temporary benthic fauna. This leads to a reduced gene flow and differentiation among individual subpopulations. The extent of isolation caused by various types of barriers and events in their history can be quantified based on the results of their genetic structure. Microsatellites are currently being used as suitable markers in various population studies, because they correctly describe recent changes. The results of various studies suggest that there is a greater spatial differentiation in the permanent fauna and higher ability of dispersion in the temporal fauna. This however is not always the case. The ongoing global climate change may result in endangering a whole range of species occurring in smaller standing water bodies and streams especially in mountain and headwater areas which are endangered by growing temperature and drying out. Population studies of endangered species may help conservation genetics identify hidden risks when planning efficient management of populations which will enable their survival and conservation for future generations.
