Conversion, Its Typology and Structure

Abstract:

Práca pojednáva o konceptualizácii konverzie v rámci sociálnych vied, rozoberá a analyzuje vybrané najdôležitejšie modely a teórie náboženskej konverzie na základe miery dôležitosti, aká je im pripisovaná v religionistike. Zhodnocuje ich klady a zápory, ako i celkový význam a prínos pre akademické štúdium konverzie. Postupuje od najranejších modelov so značne teologizujúcimi tendenciami, cez psychologické koncepcie zameriavajúce sa na kresťanskú konverziu v čase adolescencie. Samotné jadro však tvorí predstavenie a následná kritika najvýznamnejšieho modelu konverzie vôbec, modelu konverzie Johna Loflanda a Rodneyho Starka, ktorý má svojho pokračovateľa vo významnej teórii náboženstva a náboženskej afiliácie Williama Simsa Bainbridgea a Rodneyho Starka. Tie sú doplnené o autorov vlastný menší kvalitatívny výskum. Práca sleduje vývoj modelov konverzie, ktorý smeruje od užšie vymedzených a špecifických, až po všeobecnejšie súvisiace s obecnými teóriami transformácie identity, ktoré majú svoje korene v pokusoch aplikácie všeobecnejších sociálno-vedných koncepcií na fenomén konverzie. Predovšetkým sa jedná o aplikáciu konceptu socializácie. Neskoršie koncepcie vznikajú práve kritikou sociologických modelov a vychádzajú z ranejších psychologických prác Williama Jamesa a behavioralistického sociálneho psychológa Georgea Herberta Meada. V tomto ohľade vystupuje do popredia model Davida A. Snowa a Richarda Machalka. Ďalšou významnou koncepciou posúvajúcou identitu jedinca a jej transformáciu ešte ďalej, je prístup jedného z najvýznamnejších sociológov 20. storočia Ervinga Goffmana. Záver práce potom zhŕňa zistenia, ďalšie východiská a načrtáva možnosti a cesty, po ktorých by sa moderný výskum konverzie mal uberať.

Abstract:

The work deal with conceptualization of conversion within the social sciences. Author is analyzing most inportant models and theories of religious conversion, which play important role in religious studies especially. He is evaluating their positives and negatives and their total contribution to the development of the research of conversion. Work begins with most precocious models with strong theological tendentions and then continues with psychological models, which focused on Christian conversion in a age of adolescence. The main part of work is about most important Lofland-Stark model of converion, which has its offspring in influential Bainbridge-Stark theory of religion and religious afilliation. All of these is replenish with authors own little qualitative research. Progress of conversion models goes from more specific models to the more universal theories, which are connected with identity theories. These attempts have their roots in works of founder of American pragmatism and the father of psychology of religion William James, works of behavioralistic social psychologist George Herbert Mead and from the criticism of sociological models as well. In this light is important model of conversion of David A. Snow and Richard Machalek. Another important conception shifting identity theories further is conception of Erving Goffman, one of the most important sociologists of 20th century. At the end of the work, author sums up resources and conclusions and outlines next course of research.
