Subjective meaning of mobile communication in everyday interactions of emerging adults in the context of saturation of their psychosocial needs

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce bylo popsat subjektivní význam mobilní komunikace v každodenní interakci dospívajících v kontextu saturace jejich psychosociálních potřeb. Teoretická část práce nastínila změny probíhající v současné společnosti, které byly nastoleny používáním informačních a komunikačních technologií, představila klíčové psychologické přístupy ke zkoumání potřeb a motivace, vývojové období vynořující se dospělosti (Arnett, 2004) přehledovou studii stávajících výzkumů mobilních telefonů. V empirické části byly použity dvě na sebe navazující kvalitativní studie, analýza rozhovorů dle zakotvené teorie a etnometodologický rušivý experiment. V první studii byly analyzovány možné psychosociální potřeby pomocí rozhovorů metodou zakotvené teorie (Glaser, 1992, Charmazová, 2003), výsledky představují obsáhlou hierarchii naplňovaných psychosociálních potřeb, která sestává z 5 makrokategorií, 12 shluků kategorií, 27 kategorií a 60 subkategorií. Makrokategorie na nejvyšší úrovni jsou následující: potřeba sebeprezentace ve světě okolo, ochrany před ohrožením ze světa okolo, přibližování se světu okolo, oddalování se světu okolo a strukturaci světa okolo. Makrokategorie jsou propojeny jádrovou kategorií, která představuje teoretický rámec provazující tyto potřeby s mobilem jako nástrojem kontroly nad světem dospívajících. Ve druhé studii, rušivém experimentu (Garfinkel, 1967), účastníci nepoužívali, respektive pokusili se nepoužívat, mobilní telefon po dobu dvou týdnů a vedli si o svém nepoužívání průběžné záznamy. Experimentu předcházely a následovaly rozhovory s účastníky, jejichž cílem bylo získat co nejpřesnější představu o průběhu experimentu, o tom, jak se děje komunikace bez mobilního telefonu a co se stane, když je narušen sociální řád.

Abstract:

The aim of this dissertation is to describe subjective meaning of mobile communication in everyday interactions of emerging adults in the context of saturation of their psychosocial needs. Theoretical part outlines changes that are taking place in contemporary society, and which have been facilitated by usage of new information and communication technologies (ICT), key psychological approaches to needs and motivation, developmental period of emerging adulthood (Arnett, 2004) (aged 19-26) and current mobile phone studies regarding adolescent population and psychosocial benefits. Empirical part comprises of two qualitative studies, grounded theory analysis of semi-structured interviews and ethnometodological breaching experiment. In the first study, the data from 16 semi-structured interviews were analyzed using grounded theory approach (Glaser, 1992, Charmaz, 2003). Results introduce a hierarchy of psychosocial needs, which consists of 5 macro categories, 12 clusters, 27 categories and 60 subcategories. Macro categories on the top level are as follow: need for self-presentation and status in the surrounding world, need for protection from the surrounding world, need to come closer to the surrounding world, need to avoid surrounding world, and finally, need to structure and organize surrounding world. The core category links macro categories with mobile phone: mobile communication as a controlling tool of contacts with the surrounding world. In the second study, breaching experiment (Garfinkel, 1967), nine participants avoided or tried to avoid usage of mobile phone for the period of two weeks. They kept a diary about it. Before the experiment they were briefed about its objectives and ways how to write the diary and after the experiment they were subject to semi-structured interviews whose objective were to obtain the most descriptive insight into the process of how communication happens without the presence of mobile phone. To sum up, mobile phone works as a powerful tool that enables its users to manipulate the world around them and to control their intrapersonal and social needs.
