Psychosocial Needs of Healthy Siblings of Children with Serious Disease or Disability – Down Syndrome

Abstract:

Diploma thesis “Psychosocial Needs of Healthy Siblings of Children with Serious Disease or Disability – Down Syndrome” focuses on the psychosocial situation of healthy siblings of children with Down syndrome and their emotions, needs and wishes. We are also interested in potential risks, problems, gains and the impact on the future of the healthy sibling. The focal points of the theoretical part are the characteristics of people with Down syndrome, family and sibship generally. In addition to this, the theoretical part also describes the issue of families with disabled children and their healthy siblings. The practical part is based on the research conducted on five healthy siblings of children with Down syndrome. Semi-structured interviews concerning many different aspects of sibship with disabled siblings were used as the instrument of research. The main purpose of the diploma thesis is to monitor psychosocial needs of healthy siblings of disabled children.

Abstract:

V diplomovej práci „Psychosociálne potreby zdravých súrodencov detí so závažným onemocnením alebo postihnutím – Downov syndróm“ sa zaoberáme psychosociálnou situáciou zdravého súrodenca postihnutého dieťaťa a s tým spojeným prežívaním, potrebami a prianiami. Zaujimajú nás taktiež s tým spojené riziká a možné zisky a vplyv na budúcnosť súrodenca. Teoretická časť sa zameriava na charakteristiku osôb s Downovým syndrómom, na rodinu a súrodenecký vzťah obecne, ale taktiež na problematiku rodín s postihnutým dieťaťom a problematiku súrodencov. Praktická časť sa opiera o výskum prevedený na 5tich súrodencoch dieťaťa s Downovým syndrómom. Výskumnou metódou boli pološtrukturované rozhovory týkajúce sa rôznych aspektov súrodenectva s postihnutým dieťaťom. Cieľom diplomovej práce je zmapovať problematiku potrieb zdravých súrodencov postihnutých detí.
