Art in Rock: Rock Music as a Form of Art

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá rockovou hudbou, o níž se zde uvažuje jako o umění a do které kategorie umění patří. Nejprve je popsán rockový vývoj. Vybrány jsou kapitoly, které zaujímají v rockové historii důležitou pozici (Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, pozdější tvorba Beatles) nebo oblasti, ve kterých se vyskytují i významné mimohudební aspekty (surfing scéna, sanfranciská scéna). Následující část je pak věnována problému oceňování rockové hudby. Zda je možné na ni uplatňovat měřítka stanovená tradiční hudební estetikou (v této souvislosti je zmíněn Immanuel Kant a Eduard Hanslick), nebo je rocková hudba natolik specifická, že vyžaduje vlastní měřítka.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis Art in rock: rock music as a form of art deals with rock music which is considered to be a form of art, and which kind of art rock music belongs to. Firstly, the rock development is described. We focus on the most important personalities of rock history only; (there are: Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, later production of Beatles) or fields where notable nonmusical aspects can be found (Surfing Scene, San Francisco Scene). Another part of the work is devoted to the problem of rock music appreciation. Whether to appreciate it according to standard classical aesthetics of music (Immanuel Kant and Eduard Hanslick are mentioned in connection with this) or whether the rock music is so specific that it needs its own criteria.
