Gender and sexuality in the domestic violence discourses

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá význam a konceptualizaci genderu a sexuality v diskurzech domácího násilí. Zabývá se posuny v teoretické debatě o domácím násilí od počátků v 70. letech až do současnosti, v níž identifikuje dva hlavní proudy – sociologický a feministický. Tyto dva proudy se liší pohledem na vztah domácího násilí a genderu. První z nich pojímá domácí násilí v široké definici v rámci násilí v rodině a předpokládá genderovou symetrii. Druhý chápe domácí násilí s důrazem na jeho genderový kontext. V analýze jejich sporů o genderovou (a)symetrii domácího násilí lze vysledovat tři odlišná pojetí genderu – individualistické, interakcionistické a strukturalistické. Dále se práce zabývá propojením konceptů genderu a sexuality ve vztahu k domácímu násilí na tématu násilí v gay a lesbických vztazích. Krátce se věnuje také intersekcionálnímu přístupu k domácímu násilí, který reflektuje význam dalších stratifikačních kategorií. V závěru analyzuje diskurz domácího násilí v České republice pomocí sociologických výzkumů a literatury a textů neziskových organizací, které se tématu věnují. Analýza poukazuje na specifika českého diskurzu, který kombinuje sociologickou a feministickou perspektivu a vytváří širší definici domácího násilí, posunuje se od násilí na ženách k tématu násilí na mužích a v rodině, přičemž si zachovává heteronormativitní pohled na domácí násilí.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses the conceptualization of gender and sexuality within the domestic violence discourse. It concerns the shifts in the theoretical reflection of domestic violence since 1970’ up to now. Two main theoretical perspectives are discussed – sociological and feminist. These two approaches differ in their view on the role of gender in domestic violence. The first defines domestic violence in a wider context of the violence in the family and assumes gender symmetry. The second emphasizes the gendered context of domestic violence. In the analysis of the theoretical debates about gender (a)symmetry, three different perspectives on gender are indicated – individualist, interakcionist, and structuralist. The relation of gender and sexuality in the domestic violence discourse is explored through the topic of partnership violence in non-heterosexual relationships. The intersectional approach to domestic violence, which reflects interconnections between other stratifying categories, is briefly discussed, too. The final chapter is dedicated to an analysis of the domestic violence discourse in the Czech Republic in the sociological literature and research, and the discourse of non-governmental organizations which work within the field. The analysis shows that the Czech discourse is specific in its combination of sociological and feminist perspective. It uses a wider definition of domestic violence, shifting from violence against women to violence against men and in the family. However, it keeps heteronormative perception of partnership violence.
