Traditional vs. New Social Movements: changes in the project of emancipation

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problémem dis-/kontinuity osvícenského emancipačního projektu u současných nových sociálních hnutí. Vychází z identifikace dvou hlavních diskursivních zdrojů moderního projektu – tj. liberálního a radikálního politického programu – a snaží se posoudit, jaká je s ohledem na ně povaha nových sociálních hnutí v pozdní modernitě. Silný důraz je přitom kladen na výběr vhodného metodologického rámce, který by umožnil spojit normativní povahu kolektivního jednání se sociální realitou. Po představení kritických ohlasů na koncept nových sociálních hnutí jsou zvoleny a využity teoretické přístupy A. Melucciho a J. Habermase, které jsou schopny komplementárně uchopit jak makro-sociální, tak i mikro-sociální aspekty proměny pozdně moderních společností. Umožňují tak současně pochopit také charakter novosti nových sociálních hnutí, a tedy i jejich odlišnost od sociálních hnutí rané modernity. Tyto přístupy jsou dále upřesněny s ohledem na současné sociální trendy kolektivního jednání, a vymezeny jako jedno z možných interpretačních schémat politické povahy současných nových sociálních hnutí. Po jejich konfrontaci s postmodernistickým a radikálně modernistickým pohledem je učiněn závěr o radikálně-emancipační povaze značné části současných sociálních hnutí, a současně upřesněna povaha této recepce.

Abstract:

Thesis deals with an issue of dis-/continuity of the Enlightenment project of emancipation at contemporary new social movements. It is based on identification of two major discursive sources of modern project – i.e. liberal and radical political programme – and in this respect it strives to consider the nature of new social movements in late modernity. In doing so, a significant accent is put on selection of an appropriate methodological frame that would enable linking normative character of collective action and social reality. After introducing the critical responses to the new social movements concept, A. Melucci s and J. Habermas s theoretical approaches capable of complementary handling both micro-social and macro-social aspects of transformations of late modern societies are picked out and used. The nature of newness of new social movements and hence their difference as contrasted to the social movements of early modern age thus can be comprehended as well. These approaches are further specified with reference to the contemporary social trends of collective action and defined as one of the potential interpretative patterns of political character of contemporary new social movements. After their confrontation with post-modernist and radical-modernist perspective, the conclusion is drawn about the radical-emancipative character of significant segment of contemporary social movements, and simultaneously the nature of this reception is specified.
