Possible uses of Augmentative and Alternative Communication in Children with Autism

Abstract:

This study focuses on the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to enhance the communication abilities of children with autistic disorder. In the theoretical part of this study we define pervasive developmental disorders and methods of diagnosing autism, with a focus on the differential diagnosis within the autistic spectrum. We describe the prevalence of autism and its signs followed by possible causes and interventions, mainly concentrating on the principles of the TEACCH program and and a form of AAC known as PECS. The empirical part of this study contains seven separate single-case studies of children with autistic disorder. The data were collected primarily through semi-structured interviews with the childrens' teachers and questionnaires filled out by the childrens’ families. Using an A-B design, the study examined the effectiveness of AAC. In addition, we concentrated on the effectiveness of AAC in verbal and nonverbal children, in children with parents who are uninvolved and in children with parents who are simply not using AAC in the home setting. The results indicated that all seven children improved in their communication abilities and the most visible progress appeared in the first months of using AAC. We also describe the advantages of this approach using a thematic analyses. The results are discussed in relation to the methodological and practical difficulties that arose during the project.

Abstract:

V našej práci sa venujeme augmentatívnej a alternatívnej komunikácii (AAK), používanej na zlepšenie komunikácie u detí s autizmom. V teoretickej časti práce popisujeme pervazívne vývinové poruchy a metodiku vyšetrovania autizmu so zameraním na diferenciálnu diagnostiku v rámci autistického spektra. Ďalej uvádzame prevalenciu autizmu, jeho príznaky, možné príčiny a intervenciu s dôrazom na prístup TEACCH a PECS ako jednu z foriem AAK. Výskumnú časť tvorí sedem samostatných kazuistík detí s diagnózou detský autizmus (F84.0). Dáta sme získavali pomocou pološtruktúrovaných rozhovorov s vyučujúcimi detí a z dotazníkov vyplnených rodinnými príslušníkmi. Pomocou A-B modelu sme sledovali efektivitu AAK. Ďalej sme sa venovali efektivite AAK u hovoriacich a nehovoriacich detí, u detí s nespolupracujúcou rodinou a u detí nepoužívajúcich AAK v domácom prostredí. Výsledky naznačujú, že u všetkých siedmich detí došlo ku kvalitatívnemu zlepšeniu vybraných funkcií komunikácie, pričom najvýraznejší pokrok nastal v prvých mesiacoch používania AAK. Pomocou tématickej analýzy odpovedí vyučujúcich sme spracovali prínosy AAK pre žiakov. V diskusii rozoberáme metodologické a praktické obmedzenia výskumu.
