Adolescents’ social interactions with online acquaintances

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce zkoumá sociální interakce adolescentů s lidmi, které adolescenti znají výhradně z internetu. Zaměřuje se na dva druhy interakcí – online komunikaci a offline osobní setkání. Disertace zahrnuje tři kvantitativní studie, které využívají data ze tří sběrů dat mezi českými adolescenty. Studie 1 zkoumá vztahy mezi sociální úzkostností a depresivními náladami adolescentů a jejich online komunikací s online a offline známými, mediovanou jejich preferencí pro online sociální interakce (POSI). Naznačuje, že sociální úzkostnost přímo inhibuje online komunikaci, ale nepřímo ji stimuluje prostřednictvím POSI. Tyto výsledky podporují hypotézu rich-get-richer i hypotézu sociální kompenzace. Navíc studie ukazuje, že depresivní nálady jsou spojeny s častější online komunikací, což naznačuje, že adolescenti využívají tuto formu komunikace jako způsob copingu. Studie 2 se zaměřuje na osobní setkání. Zkoumá vztahy mezi různými zdroji informací o těchto setkáních, vnímáním rizika adolescentů a jejich zapojením do těchto setkání. Výsledky naznačují, že informace ze zdrojů, které akcentují potenciální rizika (např. média, rodiče) nemají vliv na vnímání rizika adolescentů. Nicméně zprávy od vrstevníků s vlastní zkušeností byly spojeny s nižším vnímáním rizika mezi dívkami. Studie 3 zkoumá motivy adolescentů pro účast na osobních setkáních a detailně popisuje rozdíly mezi setkáními, která jsou navštěvována z různých důvodů. Také ukazuje, že v souladu s teoretickými předpoklady příjemnost setkání úzce souvisí s potvrzením nebo vyvrácením očekávání adolescentů o druhé osobě. Obecná diskuse nabízí využití teorie plánovaného chování jako vhodného teoretického rámce pro další výzkum interakcí s lidmi z internetu. Dále upozorňuje na potenciální omezení hyperpersonálního modelu online komunikace. Končí doporučeními pro preventivní opatření a výzvou k budoucím longitudinálním studiím.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates adolescents’ social interactions with online acquaintances, i.e., those whom adolescents know exclusively from the internet. It focuses on two types of interactions—online communication and offline face-to-face meetings. The dissertation includes three quantitative studies that use data from three surveys of Czech adolescents. Study 1 examines the relationships between adolescents’ social anxiety and depressed moods and their online communication with online and of-fline acquaintances, mediated by their preference for online social interactions (POSI). It suggests that social anxiety directly inhibits online communication, but in-directly, via POSI, it stimulates it. This differential effect supports the rich-get-richer and the social compensation hypotheses. Moreover, the study shows that depressed moods are associated with more online communication, suggesting that adolescents use such communication as a coping strategy. Study 2 focuses on face-to-face meet-ings, investigating the relationships between different sources of information about such meetings, adolescents' risk perception, and their engagement in these meetings. The results suggest that information from sources likely to focus on potential risks (e.g., news media, parents) does not affect adolescents’ risk perception. However, accounts of peers with first-hand experience were related to lower risk perception among adolescent girls. Study 3 examines adolescents’ motives for engaging in face-to-face meetings and details the differences between meetings attended with differ-ent motives. It also shows that, in line with the expectation disconfirmation theory, the pleasantness of the meeting is closely related to the dis/confirmation of adoles-cents’ expectations about the other person. The general discussion offers a new theoretical framing of interactions with online acquaintances under the Theory of Planned Behavior and points to potential limitations of the Hyperpersonal model of online communication. It ends with recommendations for preventive efforts and a call for future longitudinal studies.
