Microplastics in soils of Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Abstract:

Mikroplasty jsou částečky plastu menší než 5 mm, které se do přírodního prostředí dostávají lidskou činností. Jejich přítomnost byla v posledních letech zkoumána ve vodách a zejména v oceánu, odkud se ale mohou dostat na pobřeží a větrným transportem dále do vnitrozemí a zapojit se do půd. Šíření mikroplastů od pobřeží a jejich rozšíření ve vnitrozemských půdách bylo v této práci zkoumáno na ostrově South Uist v souostroví Vnějších Hebrid ve Skotsku. Zde bylo odebráno 123 vzorků povrchové vrstvy půdy podél západního pobřeží a ve čtyřech transektech vedoucích skrze ostrov západovýchodním směrem, z nichž 63 vzorků bylo snímáno pod optickým mikroskopem, kde byla vizuálně hledána plastová mikrovlákna (dále „mikrovlákna“). Počty mikrovláken byly statisticky zpracovány a rozšíření plastů bylo modelováno pro celé souostroví. Zatímco v pobřežních vzorcích je medián 3 580 mikrovláken na 1 litr půdy, ve vnitrozemí se jedná o 36 900 mikrovláken, s maximem až 169 180 mikrovláken. Množství mikrovláken je ovlivněno zejména zrnitostí půdy, vegetací a kořeny, přičemž vítr eroduje mikrovlákna z písčitých půd s méně hustou vegetací, zatímco v jemnozrnných půdách s hustší vegetací a kořeny se mikrovlákna usazují a nejsou snadno erodovatelná. Zachytávání mikrovláken v těžších půdách znamená do jisté míry trvalé uložení a nemožnost dalšího transportu a znečišťování dalšího prostředí. Mikrovlákna se zde však budou nadále kumulovat, což ohrožuje rostliny, zvířata a v důsledku i člověka.

Abstract:

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, that enter the natural environment with human action. In the last years, their abundance was widely studied in water and particularly in the ocean. Microplastics get to the coast from the ocean, and wind can transport them further inland, where they are incorporated into the soils. In this study, microplastic transport from the coast and their distribution in the inland soils were investigated in the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Along the western coastline and in four transects through the isle in the west-east direction, 123 topsoil samples were collected, from which 63 samples were microscoped using an optical microscope, where the plastic microfibres (hereinafter „microfibres“) were visually quantified. The numbers of microfibres were statistically processed, and their distribution was modelled for the whole archipelago. In the coastal samples, a median was 3,580 microfibres per 1 litre of soil; in the inland samples, a median was 36,900 microfibres, with a maximum of 169,180 microfibres. Their amount is influenced mainly by soil texture, vegetation, and roots. Wind deflates the microfibres from sandy soils with less dense vegetation; meanwhile, the microfibres deposit in soils with a finer texture, and they are not easily erodible from these soils. Retention of microfibres in the heavier soils means their more or less permanent deposition and incapability of further wind deflation and polluting other environments. However, microfibres are accumulating in these soils, which endanger plants, animals, and—as a result—people.
