Domestic horse (Equus ferus caballus): Behaviour of Geldings and Mares in Mixed Herds

Abstract:

V současné době se lze setkat se smíšenými stády valachů a klisen u koní chovaných pro rekreační účely- Literatury na toto téma je však překvapivě málo. V literární rešerši jsem se zaměřila na 1) strukturu society koní 2) projevy chování hřebců ve stádě 3) chování valachů ve ve stádě. Největším rozdílem v sociálním uspořádání volně žijících stád a stád chovaných v zajetí je absence hřebců v uměle vytvořených stádech. Ta velmi ovlivňuje původní harémové uspořádání, a jak vyplývá z mého výzkumu, valaši pak volí různé strategie chování ve vztahu ke klisnám i k sobě navzájem. Hlavním zjištěním je právě pestrost sledovaného chování, přičemž někteří mnou sledovaní valaši vytvořili harém, někteří se pohybovali solitérně a někteří vytvořili mládeneckou skupinu.

Abstract:

At present, mixed herds of gelding and mares in horses kept for recreational purposes can be found. However, the literature on this subject is surprisingly low. In the literary research I focused on 1) the structure of the horse society 2) the behavior of the stallions in the herd 3) the behavior of the geldings in the herd. The biggest difference in the social organisation of wild herds and herds kept in captivity is the absence of stallions in artificially formed herds. This has a great effect on the original harem arrangement, and as my research suggests, geldings then chooses different behavioral strategies in relation to mares and to each other. The main findings are the variety of observed behavior, as some of the observed geldings formed a harem, some moved solitarily, and some created a bachelor group.
